Yards went all out in the 8th because he knew he was losing the fight and needed to turn things around. Then he was done...

Kovalev of 4 years ago vs Canelo of today= Canelo gets beaten into a pulp. Today's version of Kovalev may legitimately lose to Canelo, especially with all those rehydration clauses and 118-110 judges. I'd say Canelo by decision. I hope Kovalev at least gets paid a ton for this, he doesn't need to prove anything to anyone at this stage.Last edited by alexjust; 08-26-2019, 01:42 PM.Comment

But trying to look at this objectively: Kovalev was in trouble, but he was not defenseless to warrant the waive off. And as a benchmark: Wilder in his fight with Ortiz was at a worse shape in that 7th round (if I'm not mistaken) than Kovalev in the 8th, IMO.

Kovalev has options in Bivol, Gvozdyk/Beterbiev winner, Gilberto Ramirez. Hopefully he he does not give into any clenelo contract gimmicks and says no las vegas. VADA would need to start yesterday as well.Comment

Yarde did better than I expect him to, fighting in a foreign territory against an experienced champion, 12 fights as an amateur, 18 as a pro, never been past 8 rounds before this. He definitely show a lot of balls in there, one thing I like about what I saw in his fight with Kovalev is this, every time he was hurt, he kept his poker face on until the end. I just wish they had taken the traditional route with him. Instead of fighting 18 bums and then throwing him in hoping the older man would crumble against the younger lion...Comment

Once again a good article that falls short because an editor doesn't get that stamina is gained through ring experience . The fact he went 11 when never been past 7 would show good stamina and better preparation and understanding of late rounds would see Yarde winning a rematch so there's no if about Yardes progressing , he did it already in the loss and will be that much harder to take a W off him .Comment

I am not a Canelo fan, but he is much younger and partly because of that, much faster, AND he is an excellent body puncher (which in my opinion will be the deciding factor). So I would expect Canelo to KO past-prime Kovalev, unless Kovalev catches Canelo with something big. But then again Canelo hast a great chin. Another factor would be Canelos defense / upper body movement. I think Kovalev would get tired in the last third of the fight after missing quite a lot.Comment
