If he turned down a equal step aside fee as the payday for this fight they f#cking ******. Getting paid the same for a fight for not fighting ain't no decision at all to me. As long as he gots the winner, if its Kovalev, or a vacant title fight if Canelo wins & drops the belt it seems the superior business move. You get a nice payday for nothing & another nice payday for a more hyped Kovalev with a Canelo W or you likely get a weaker opponent for a vacant belt, but can do it on home turf & while not likely to be as good as a Kovalev payday it should be decent.
Yarde wants the world title and Kovalev's name on his record, he said in the interview that to him it's not so much about the money, it's more about the accolades. It's a refreshing attitude for a young fighter to have, especially one who spent time training in the Mayweather gym where the obviously money-hungry TMT mentality prevails.

I get that, but sometimes a good business decision is better than a risky legacy decision. And it coulda been that Kovalev beats Canelo so ends up beating a even more hyped Kovalev that he'd get even more credit for beating. Basically he'd get paid twice for one fight if Kovalev beat Canelo. This is after all prizefighting as people like to say & if you can get more money for less punches to the head you should ALWAYS take it.

Things don't always go as smoothly as you're assuming when it comes to step aside money. There is no guarantee that Yarde would have fought Kovalev next, even if Kovalev beat Canelo. Maybe if that happened for example, a huge offer for a rematch would have come into play. Or Kovalev would have ditched the belt. Or an injury would have prevented either man from fighting. Or Yarde might have got beaten by someone else. Mike Tyson paid Lennox Lewis step aside money to the tune of $4 Million, when Lewis was mandatory challenger, and then the two then didn't end up fighting until 6 years later.
