It was short notice and Kovalev already had the Yarde fight set up. It’s difficult to get out of that since tickets were already on sale and agreements were signed off like Kovalev said. With that being said, would a Kovalev/Canelo fight be intriguing? I think so.
Kovalev looked good in his last fight. He’s clearly not the monster he was a few years ago, but he’s adapting to his age. He’s older, but experienced. The way he fought Eleider showed a crafty veteran on Kovalev’s part. He was selective with his punch output and didn’t take any serious risks. He didn’t look shot, but also didn’t look like the Kovalev of old. If he can stay sharp and take care of business on Saturday and an impressive fashion, than I say he’s got a good chance of beating Canelo. That’s IF Canelo doesn’t drain him down to a catch weight or impose rehydration clauses which I highly doubt.
