Comments Thread For: Wilder: Just Because Joshua Lost Once Doesn't Mean It's Over

Deontay Wilder won't write off Anthony Joshua after only one loss. The unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion contends that his dethroned rival can resurrect his career following a devastating defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr. two months ago. Wilder reiterated as part of a new interview with GQ that Joshua "quit" during the seventh and final round of his technical-knockout loss to Ruiz on June 1 at Madison Square Garden, yet Wilder also emphasized that Joshua's critics shouldn't give up on the British superstar.

You see them here all the time “I don’t care about undefeated” etc, once a fighter takes a loss, then he is a bum. Julian Williams said it best. They were riding that guy hard, soon as he got KTFO, it was “He is overhyped” anyways.

This is why boxers fight bums and take on dangerous fight in about 5/6. You know what? As long as a boxer is fighting great competition then I couldn’t care less if they lose. If you lose then go back to the drawing board and pick yourself up again, just like Julian Williams did.

Nothing Wilder ever says will ever be appreciated by Joshua's fans.

Wilder is right here, he lost to Fury and still has a career.

I agree. I think the criticism of Joshua isn’t only because he lost, but that he lost to such a huge underdog.

When Pacquiao lost to Márquez or Morales lost to Pacquiao or Porter lost to Kell Brook I don’t think people automatically wrote them off as over hyped bums. Even recent examples like Miley losing to Spence, or Ortiz losing to Wilder. These were close fights in paper that may or may not have played out that way in the ring.

What we had with Joshua was him getting his entire ass handed to him by a guy who would have been a huge underdog even if he had a full camp, but actually took the fight in 6 weeks notice. And as good as I think Andy Ruiz is, I kind of think the criticism going Joshua’s way is justified. You got obliterated. If you lost a decision or something, ok, I get it. But you got destroyed, man. That’s the definition of exposed. Hopefully he can get his career back on track, but honestly I’m pulling for Andy, and hoping it’s a close decision so the door on Joshua doesn’t shut completely. I want to see him be a player in the division.
