Whyte didnt like the deal, turned down the fight. Haymon/PBC negotiated the $9mil, venue of your choice rematch deal. Matchroom are just following the contract. Why isnt Ruiz blaming his advisors for the **** deal, and presumably having no faith in him actually winning. If the deal was that bad, should have turned it down and let some other guy have $15mil
Why isnt Haymon getting blamed for the rematch clause?

C'mon man, who didn't see this coming? I knew he'd try to get the fight as favorable for his fighter as he could. Why not? And if it doesnt work, it was worth the try. -
He should get blamed for the rematch clause.
The last heavyweight that made less money in a contractually mandated rematch for the heavyweight championship was Rid**** Bowe. He made $8 mil in 1993.
Hasim Rahman made more than Ruiz will make and that fight happened in 2001!Comment

Who's said the deal was bad. I suspect they feel like they just got leverage to get more money & are using it as most people would. I mean ultimately every deal is a fight by fight deal that can & sometimes does get re-worked.
Some of you guys act like if you agree to take a job that you just get the same pay til you quit. Nah thats now how it works. You can ask for a raise. And if you don't get it you can weigh your options to do other things including quitting. Granted this is in a smaller window of time than you asking for a raise after a year at a job after agreeing to a wage, but the concept is the same.
Or if there is a legit issue with the rematch deal as Andy is saying idk that you say that hole exists at the signing of the first fight. I think you just sign the deal, take the fight & exploit the problem with the rematch situation if you win.Comment

As bad as Haymon is to fans, you have to give it to him in that he looks out for his clients. If I were Ruiz, I'd be all for bleeding the giant AJ money train for as much as he can before it gets into a messy legal battle that would result in lowered income and removal of belts.Comment

True! Seems like Andy signed a bad deal after pulling the upset...however who's to say Andy wasn't advised that it was a bad deal and said "I Don't Care Make The Fight I Need The Money"
Fighters always have the finally say! ALWAYS! That being said, he made great money and he pulled off the historic upset. So yeah you can argue "Haymon Got Him A Bad Deal" however had it not been for Haymon helping him get out of his Top Rank Deal, he would be on the Top Rank Shelf with absolutely no money to fight Arum and probably looking for a regular job
Gift and a Curse I guess you can call it
I would much rather have the $5-7 Million or whatever it was for the first fight and stuck in a bad rematch clause for another $9 Million (which is probably being renegotiated right now for more) rather than being in the position he was in before...just saying!

I don't think Bowe-Holyfield was a rematch clause fight. They had a fight inbetween their fight and a rematch. He should get blamed for the rematch clause.

Hasim Rahman made more than Ruiz will make and that fight happened in 2001!
and how many contractually mandated rematches have there been since then?

At least bring up some stats that are relevant.Last edited by Robbie Barrett; 08-18-2019, 04:07 PM.Comment

It is a relevant stat.
We’re talking about heavyweight championship fights were the champion lost, triggered a rematch clause and the fight happened.
Lewis-Rahman 2 was the last one. Rahman made more than Ruiz will.
Before that, it was Holyfield-Tyson 2. Holyfield made way more than Ruiz will.
Before that, Bowe-Holyfield 2. Bowe made $8 million dollars, $1 million less than Ruiz will make but it happened in 1993.
If you want to include Lewis-Holyfield 2, both made more than Ruiz will.
Fury was also in line to make more for his rematch with Klitschko than Ruiz will make to rematch Joshua.
