At the time they were about to come to a deal SRL retired from boxing due to a detached retina. By the time he came back 2-3 years later the fight was past its sale date. Either way Pryor was great at 140. At 147 he would not have been an elite fighter. He was known to avoid fighters much taller than himself. At 5’6 he may have been mauled at WW
I don't remember watching or hearing any scuttlebutt of any kind regarding Leonard offering something to Pryor. Nothing. I was around at that time and watched everything. Leonard wanted no part of him, it was all wrong for him with no upside of any kind. SRL at a promotional event brought Hagler to lead him on and then dropped the idea. I lost all respect for him after that. He never came close to a deal for Pryor and definitely not Hagler in the early 80's. He fought Hagler when he knew he was shopworn.

Now after this they were supposed to fight during the Pryor/Argüello war but as I stated before this was at the time SRL got a detached retina and retired.

I also wouldn’t say Hagler was shop worn. SRL was a career Welterweight in the pros having fought light welter during his amateur and Olympic career. Going into the Hagler fight he was coming off a 3 year retirement and his second fight at middleweight. The other was the fight prior to his three year layoff.

We are talking about a career welter here with no tune up coming off a three year layoff and only one fight in five years against the ATG of the MW division. Going into this fight Hagler was 32 (one month removed from 33) and SRL was 30 (one month removed from 31). Hagler was also riding a 4 fight KO win streak having fought 4 times in two years. He had every advantage over SRL and was a 3 to 1 favorite to win. If anything Hagler wasn’t shop worn he was fighting ready whereas SRL should have been rusty and beaten soundly.

What SRL did defeats any sense of reason. His achievement was extraordinary and one of the ATG accomplishments.

Great post. My belief is that SRL could have and should have fought Hagler April 15th 1985. He wanted no part of that. Hagler was at his best ready to make the most of what he worked hard for after being denied for so many years. SRL was smart and stayed away. I would have advised him to do the same even though he was a big welterweight, who at 30, should fight at Middleweight. When he saw the Mugabi fight he knew he had a chance. After 60 fights and that 11 rd war Hagler was in the d cline. He was ready to retire but took the fight because of the money. SRL had the advantages by still being in his prime and not burnt out as well as the smaller ring and 12 rds not 15. What SRL did was extraordinary but objectively it was enough to earn a draw and not take away Hagler's title. Hagler should have demanded 15 rds because he would have stopped Ray on exhaustion in rd 13. Marvin should have fought lefty the whole fight and it would not been so close. They screwed Hagler before he got his title shot and he got screwed in the end. That's why he said F this and retired

In addditon you pointed out something I did not know about SRL Pryor. I've now seen even more videotapes of interviews. ****** decision by Pryor. He had a chance if he was coked up and had the Panama Lewis stuff in the bottle. However, SRL was much larger than skinny Alexis and would have inevitably nailed Pryor with much more power ala the left hook against Davey Boy Green. Alexis stood in front of the wildman. SLR would have had more movement more speed and again Way way more power. SLR wins by KO in an exciting fight.
