I thought Whitaker didn't let his hands go enough and allowed Oscar to win rounds in the second half of the fight based on activity and work rate.
... Whitaker landed 232 of 582 punches to 191 of 556 for De La Hoya.

I hated ODLH for a long time after that, but got over it.
I hated Erik Morales less,,when he beat Zaragoza.

      I like sweet pea...RIP...

Whitaker landed more JABS. Now go fetch those power punch numbers

Though De La Hoya did not land as many punches or jabs as Whitaker, he had a distinct advantage in power punches, landing 146 to Whitaker's 72, which may have swayed the judges in his favor.

Oscar won because he outworked Whitaker and landed way more power shots. By the way Whitakers corner kept telling him all night he was losing and being out worked. Finally going into the 12th told he we need this last round to win the fight...a round Whitaker totally gave away by dancing and showboating and not throwing anything. Anyone calling this fight a robbery don't know shyt about boxing. It was a ugly close fight. Nobody looks good or exciting fighting Whitaker but Oscar out worked him and brought the fight and the big edge in power punching won it for him.

Rip sweet pea was imo the greatest defensive fighter of all time.

            A true legend.

Whitaker deserved that W vs Oscar and Chavez. Just didn't have the same level of marketing behind him. His skills and defense weren't appreciated as much as what should have been the case.

I bet a majority of those landed punches for Whitaker happened in the first half of the fight.

... I heard that ODLH actually felt that he didn't do enough and wanted to rematch Whitaker, but Arum didn't let him...

.. Oscar was 9 years younger... and he was 5′ 10½"/179cm in height and 73″ /185cm in reach... vs Whitaker who was 5′ 6″/ 168cm in height, and 69″/175cm in reach... well...
