The WBC needs to be held accountable for Adonis Stevenson’s health

Since everyone is starting to realize how completely insane the WBC is, let’s roast them for something way worse than a franchise belt.

Let’s point out that they played a huge part in Adonis Stevenson’s coma and any issues he has with his health going forward.

Stevenson’s last mandatory before losing to Oleksander Gvozdyk in December of 2018 came against Tony Bellew in November of 2013.

That’s right, Stevenson went five years without fighting a WBC mandatory.

The WBC let him keep his title for five years without fighting a top light heavyweight. They then order a 39 year old Stevenson, who hasn’t fought the best light heavyweights in five years, to fight an undefeated, talented top tier light heavyweight in his prime.

Maybe if they made Stevenson fight a mandatory, he would have already lost before he was 39. Maybe he wouldn’t be fighting those types of guys when he’s an old man.

And maybe if they approved a real referee to be in charge of the fight instead of a Canadian nationalist who wanted Stevenson to win, Stevenson would have been protected instead being beaten half to death along the ropes.

I wonder if this was the conversation between the WBC and Stevenson before that fight:

“Hey Adonis, I know you’re 39 and we’re making you fight a mandatory for the first time in five years. I know you’re nervous, he might be the best in the division. But don’t worry, we’ll assign a ref to the fight that won’t stop it unless you’re in a coma!”

So with all that being said, I think it’s time for the WBC to go away. If not, I hope they’re held accountable for what happened to Stevenson.

I understand what you’re trying to say but he’s not FORCED to take any fight and there has been plenty of good champions at his age.

What happened is just unfortunate on his part, but nobody could foresee that happening. It can happen to anyone, age 19 or 39.

WBC are a disgrace in general for letting fighters avoid mandatories for years but that’s not nothing to do with what happened to Stevenson.

Well this thread is bad. WBC should be ashamed for letting AS fight cherry picks for his reign, but when the champ finally stepped up and faced Gvozdyk, it’s not the WBC’s fault what happened there.

He fought Badou Jack right before the Gvozdyk fight. Jack was highly ranked by Ring, TBRB, and BoxRec at the time.

What kind of bull***** is this? The WBC isn't anybody's marchmaker. Nobody's forced to fight anybody if they don't want to. It wasn't anybody's fault that the fight got made. Stevenson never really showed serious signs of decline before the fight and was a long reigning champion where Gvozdyk was an unknown, unproven fighter who's never been to the big stage before. It wasn't that risky a fight for Stevenson, it's not like they threw him in there with a 250 lbs 6'5 heavyweight.

Stevenson had a choice to fight better opponents but chose the PBC Protection Plan instead. It’s his own fault.
