  • Boxing decisions that changed the course of history

I’m thinking of controversial boxing decisions that really seemed to really change the course of boxing history.

Recently, I think Ward-Kovalev 1 comes to mind. I think Kovalev won that fight 116-111. If he gets the decision, there probably isn’t a rematch. He might never have fought Álvarez, be undefeated right now and everyone’s clear choice for #1 p4p.

The decision in the Foreman-Briggs fight prevented Foreman from having super fights with Holyfield, Tyson and Lewis and that could have reshaped boxing history.

While Pernell Whitikar still got to fight Felix Trinidad in a huge fight, it would have been much bigger if he had gotten the decision over De La Hoya.

Leonard-Hagler had a huge impact on both men’s legacies and many people thought Hagler won the fight.

Name some others and how you think it changed boxing history.

Boxing history. Joe Louis vs Max Schmelling. If Max would have won the rematch the heavyweight title would have been associated with a repressive regime and used as a propaganda tool by
Hitler. There is plenty of evidence that indicated Max wasn't a **** but that's irrelevant.

Brook fighting GGG instead of a unification with Vargas. The winner had an IBF mandatory against Spence. Spence wins and holds the IBF & WBO. Crawford moves to welterweight and he's the WBO mandatory. Spence vs. Crawford would've already happened.

SRL/Hagler, if Hagler gets the decision he doesn’t retire and there’s a rematch, maybe a trilogy. You mentioned it already but that’s one that has always bothered me

Except that was a KO not a decision.

              DelaHoya / Sturm .
This obvious robbery IMO gave Oscar a false sense of hope that he could hang with the Elite Middleweights . Set him up to get KO'd by Hopkins and DelaHoyas career was pretty much down hill after that loss .
While Hopkins went on to be looked on as one of the best MW's of his era and got some mainstream appeal due to that win . Oscars only good win after that was against a faded Mayorga . Some would even say Stevie Forbes shoulda got the nod when he fought Oscar .
Also outta that fight came the relationship between DelaHoya and Hopkins to get Goldenboy promotions started . Which has boxings Only superstar in Canelo Alvarez.

Foreman wanted no part of LL.

Boom Boom losing a decision to Bramble in the rematch.
Had he won, he might have fought Pryor or Camacho.

Foreman losing to Jimmy Young was a big one.
The judges were swayed by the people heavily cheering for Young.

Weaver losing the rematch with Dokes. Had Weaver won, he would have been only the third heavyweight champion to regain his belt.
And Dokes would have not flown to Africa and get KO'd by Coetzee. Weaver already KO'd Coetzee previously.

Holmes losing to Spinks on a controversial D in the first fight and the rematch.

If Castillo had gotten the decision VS Floyd, he'd probably be in the HOF.

All of Sweet Pea's marks on his record up til the Tito L. Guy should be waaaaaaay bigger then he was. He got jobbed by Jose Luis Ramirez. He got jobbed by JCC. He got jobbed by Oscar. Sweet Pea shoulda retired with a 43-2 record & been 43-0 til he dropped his last two fights, not a 40-4-1 record.
