There's only 4 boxers out of 100 athletes on the list. That's scary for boxing, because what it says is that boxing is top-heavy, where a few guys make all the money, while everyone else is struggling to survive.
i think its been like this for decades. just trace back...
before the current lot we had pac and mayweather, before them it was oscar, tyson, sugar ray leonard, ali... its always been top heavy. i think sports are like that in general.

the biggest issue i see is the lack of endorsement dollars. mayweather didnt have much either when he was around. surely there are marketing companies out there that can market these boxers and make more money. the reason theyre making big dollars in the first place is largely because of their popularity... they need to translate this into money.

My impression is that it's been that way for 20 years or more. Meaning boxing is neither growing nor fading compared to how it was before.

I do think there's many more boxers making 6/7 figure dollars per fight now compared to pre-PBC - and Haymon's efforts have seen competitors have to step up and match. DAZN is starting to pour money in as well.

Soccer though has maybe greatest depth of earnings. Most premier league first-teamers and that is close to 300 or so are making 7/8 figures and then you can add another 1000 players around the world. Even in a country like Ecuador top players are making 6 figures per year.

Boxing's been slowly bleeding for decades now.

Since the pay-per-view model came to prominence in the '80s.

Team sports athletes used to make 5 figures in the '80s.

Boxers used to make wayyyyyy more money than everybody else.

Now guys in soccer, the NBA & NFL & MLB have 9 figure contracts, while boxing has either stayed the same or gotten worst.

I'd bet money that there would be more than 5 boxers on the highest paid on the 1980 Forbes list.
