Caveats are as follows:
1) a lot of us told the gang that Ruiz has talent... Joshua did not lose to a bad fighter by any stretch.
2) The Ortiz Wilder fight was very similar, it is a disturbing precedent which is the "disease" that afflicts talented fighters in the heavyweight division.
Ortiz almost did the same thing to Wilder as what happened tonight. If he had succeeded we would have had this same discussion at that time.
Anthony Joshua is a young talented fighter whom, like many in the division are not fighting enough. They are not getting the experience, not being put in situations like happened tonight where Joshua could not see that Ruiz was pushing him back off balance so he could not counter Ruiz's shots. This is a relatively minor adjustment to a fighter who has fought pressure fighters.
Fury, Ortiz and Ruiz among others have experience. Therefore they are able to do things in the ring that are second nature. It does not make them automatically better, but because of the state of the division it gives them a tremendous advantage IF guys are not fighting regularly!
The promoters have convinced these guys to fight safety first, to fight opponents where the judges will help them... the judges in this fight? One had Joshua ahead, the other two had Ruiz ahead by a mere point.... And what is happening is instead of the best fighting each other and getting experience, these guys are JUST NOT Fighting enough!
AJ is a very talented fighter who needs to learn how to move his head, stand his ground, use his punches more in the early rounds, etc. His footwork is also crap because he just does not move against enough opponents. A fighter as talented as AJ should not let a smaller man walk him down so easily.
Wilder also made many similar mistakes against Ortiz and it almost cost him. Wilder is better now because he has fought Fury among others. When he fought Fury he was basically outclassed but he did adjust and throw his money punch straighter and caught Fury...that adjustment came with experience.
These guys are going to atrophy if they do not resolve to fight each other and not wait for the ****** promoters. Ruiz has experience and is talented as well and he used that to great effect against Joshua tonight. Joshua needs to be put in those situations and learn to make adjustments and not just back off and fight only when it suits him. This only comes with experience and understanding different opponents through engaging them.
Ditch the promoters and fight fight and fight! learn to box, to move, learn to read an opponent, read distance, to set traps etc....Experience!!
