  • Comments Thread For: Wilder Isn't a Particularly Good Boxer But He's Good Enough

By Michael Rosenthal - Some people I respect speak of Deontay Wilder as if he violates the sanctity of the sport's traditional glamour division. "Worst boxer in history among heavyweight titleholders," one has said of Wilder, who defends his WBC title against Dominic Breazeale on Saturday in Brooklyn. "Crude...

imo, if he had a much better defense, he would last a long time as champ.

He’s not the worst boxer by a long stretch and his power makes up for some of his other shortcomings. But the line about not ducking challenges is silly. He has had 40 fights and only 5 of them would be worth a mention and only two are
truly world class. Stiverne was already way passed his best by the time they fought and his best wasn’t much in the first place.

Wilder's boxing has been under-estimated by many

Jab Hook believes that Wilder's boxing has been under-estimated by many, and add to that the lesson in the “sweet science” he got from Tyson Fury five months ago. Remember, though he only started boxing at 20yo, within 2 years Deontay had won the US amateur heavyweight title and the National Golden Gloves. The next year he nabbed a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics. He can box.

I heard someone saying he's among the longest reigning title holders in the game right now. Idk if someone said he was #2 overall or just #2 for the WBC.

Its kinda crazy he's been around as long as he has.

Hopefully that ends tomorrow cuz I threw a lil more on Breazeale today lol. +1200 by KO. Not hating on Wilder just think Breazeale is a live dog & there is mucho value on him.

Hey, if you only bet the favorite you never win anything big.

                Past his best?
                Wilder was his 1st defense.
Many people picked Stiverne to KO Wilder in the 1st fight

Stiverne had just won the title, and was the favorite going into the fight.

Sucker bet, Breazeale is as bad (and I would say worse) a boxer as Wilder at best and a much worse athlete. He is probably closer to like having a 25 to 1 shot so you are getting like half value.

Breazeale has no defense and no real ability to counter, so how is he going to win? He wins through attrition but that is against guys who may hit decently well (who all hurt Breazeale) who have poor stamina, Wilder has really good stamina for a heavy and if he will be allowed to deal damage all night that is not usually a plan that works out well against a big punching heavyweight.

Not that Wilder is unbeatable but the ability to actually make him work hard to get his offense or make him pay for a mistakes is key to beating him. A slow plodder that absorbs damage with little to no boxing ability is pretty much a guy tailor made for Wilder.
