My guess is cuz it was a vacant belt that Jacobs just won. Jacobs probably had to get permission to fight Canelo vs fight a mando himself or maybe they had to get a mando in place first idk.

I think the IBF gots some rules where you gotta fight a mando when a belts been vacant, maybe even 2 in a row or maybe thats another ABC Group rule, or something like that.

Don't matter who's got the belt now. I'd bet Team Canelo knew it was likely to be in the pipeline if not a definite thing upon fighting for the belt that he'd have to fight a mando for them.

I wouldn't be mad at Canelo dropping this belt over this fight. But I get that defeats the purpose of all these things he's been saying about wanting all the belts.

Personally I just don't see the upside with getting all these belts. Its a cool ass picture of you with all those belts d****d over you, but ultimately the guys who've had all the belts for long periods of time are in mando bs ass fight hell & hurt their overall value in the sport by not taking the fights people wanna see them in more often.

If mando fights were legit fights with legit deserving top guys every time out it wouldn't be a problem. But look at some of the bs mando's Klitschko had to have when he had all the HW belts for years. Look at most of these guys who got more than 1 belt.

The value is in your name not these cornball belts at some point. And Canelo is way past that point.

Fighters who win or even fight for a belt increase their value.

Promoters can use belts to sell a fight better.

Hell it even sounds better for refs & judges to say they've ref'd or judge'd x "title fights" which is obviously gonna be a more impressive number for refs & judges of today then yesteryear.

The only problem is it sucks for fans & prospective fans cuz it makes it all so confusing & prevents the legit best guys from fighting which lowers appeal for the sport & makes it a less exciting & compelling sport as often as it could be. Which in turn drops all the value these mfers in it for the money are getting so you could still argue its hurting the value of boxing for EVERYONE.

What I guess it does do is spread out the money more among numerous ABC suits, fighters & promoters. But thats just in theory cuz maybe there is more value in being the legit #3 guy in the world in a one champion boxing setup vs being the 4th best title holder in a four champion boxing setup, but maybe not idk. We certainly won't be finding out anytime soon I know that.
