Kevin Mitchell wrote a book on this called War Baby, a very interesting read.

Among other things, it details the break up with Emmanuel Steward and the hiring of Stan Johnson, who was unheard of before or since.
McClellan had all sorts of problems going into the fight, from food prep and coming in too light to practically coaching himself. He even wrapped his own hands for the fight which never happens.

The referee barely spoke any English and frankly appeared to be unfit for purpose.

Just an f'd up situation all round with awful, awful consequences.

I don't hate McClellan at all, I'm happy for him...he is living a life he truly deserves.
