  • Comments Thread For: Robert Garcia: Errol Spence is Basic But Does Everything Well

Robert Garcia readily admits that Errol Spence wasn't his first choice to be his younger brother Mikey Garcia's next opponent. The four-division world champion has stated several times that he is taking the fight to enhance his legacy and is daring to be great.

That's the same critique I would give Mikey Garcia. Neither move their head to avoid punches. Neither have fast hand or foot speed. Garcia is even more basic as he doesn't even body punch by his own admission.

Team Garcia seems to think Mikey Garcia got prime Roy Jones or PBF level talent. Mikey is a great fighter but has average talent to me . He has good all around skills but there isn't one particular thing he does amazing.

Listening to his camp you'd think Mikey got lightening hand speed, fast feet, amazing punching power in both hands, etc.... Reality is that is how I would describe Spence not Mikey!!!

I like Mikey but he has no advantages in this fight, I'm not going to bend the laws of physics in his favor, Mikey is a good guy but he chose wrong.

Agreed, although Mikey has been body punching a lot more often in his last few fights. I do think that the boxing minds in the Garcia family would not be so confident of Mikey's chances if they didn't see at least something to exploit in Errol's game. I hope so, because otherwise Errol's going to beat the tar out of Mikey.

Just curious, outside of Khan, who has faster hands than Spence at 147?

I think it's close between him and Crawford in that department. None of them have particularly fast hands.

              Thurman has/had faster hands.

lol Garcia is even more basic than Spence. I mean almost all of his offense is just simple 1-2's. It works for him because he has good timing and accuracy but still.

I don't believe the Garcia camp is overestimating Mikey's abilities. Robert said it in the article, Spence is similar to Mikey because they both have a basic style. No one in Mikey's camp wanted this fight. They've been very open about this.

Mikey is very textbook, fights with good balance and knows how to find windows for his offense.

Spence has clubs for fists. I've met him a couple of times and his knuckles are like small boulders. I'm sure every time he hits you, clean or not, it hurts.

The amount of energy Mikey/Spence will expend in the first half of this fight will be very telling. Will Mikey over exert himself to survive early? Can he handle that amount of activity while carrying more weight than he ever has in a 12 round fight? Or will Spence try to force an early KO opening himself to getting countered and slowly wearing down in the process?

I've never seen Spence tired, no matter how much pressure/aggression he puts on in a fight. I think Spence will be smart about his activity. Mixing pressure with boxing from the outside and letting his hands go when appropriate, slowly breaking Mikey down.

Mikey gets hella props for taking this fight, and my financial support as well, but I don't see this ending well. Best case scenario, he goes the distance having some moments throughout the fight and performs better than most expected.

At the moment, I'm expecting a 4-6 round stoppage by Spence.

Spence attacks his opponents body very often with power shots as they are punching bags.
