An aging fighter could certainly use that extra monetary cushion. That would have been a smart move, especially given how Top Rank dropped him right after he lost the rematch.
He secured the bag, for him and his family.

After getting whatever he got on the first fight, Alvarez signed a deal that got him a 7-figure payday, plus however much guaranteed money over a certain time/fights after that, without giving up control of Quebec.

Until Zurdo Ramirez gets a belt, no one at 175lb is on bigger money than Alvarez having a meaningful fight in Montreal, and Arum knows that. Alvarez wins a couple tickovers, and the money makes sense again.

It would have covered a third fight in the event of an Alvarez loss.
It is bad enough a rematch and to have a boring rematch does not mean a third fight fans i know are just dumb

After the Kovalev win Alvarez signed a two-year deal with Top Rank, which guaranteed him a seven-figure purse for as many as seven fights.

THAT is what I would consider securing the bag for him and his family.

But as soon as he lost by decision in the rematch Top Rank voided the deal. So it wasn't much of a guarantee after all.

It just feels like he could have done better for himself after having knocked out Kovalev. Like he deserved a little more than what he is going to end up getting.

It's because he received a voluntary gift from Kovalev. He owed Kovalev a rematch because he was not the mandatory challenger at the time he won the title from Sergey. However, Kovalev doesn't owe him nothing since Alvarez' victory over him came as a result of a charitable defense on Sergey's part for his WBO Light heavyweight title.

Fair enough. I understand that part now.

If you think the deal was simply voided, that'd be a mistake. With Haymon helping also look over the deal, I doubt that he advised Alvarez and his camp for a moment to sign anything with zero guaranteed money on the chance of a defeat.
