I think this is a wise decision. Retire from boxing before boxing retires you! He's had a good run he can always be involved in boxing in other ways!!

        Re

Stevenson absolutely crushed him in the rematch. That probably had a huge effect on his confidence.

I liked Fonfara, he wasn't the most skilled and his defense was pretty poor but he was rugged, threw hard and threw alot. He had a helluva run starting with his first fight with Stevenson (where he put on a show despite the loss), and then wins against Ngumbu, Chavez jr, and Cleverly. His fight against Clev was pretty damn entertaining, both guys were just throwing heat for the entire fight.

You wonder how different his career would have gone had that bout with Smith been a win. In that one, he hurt Smith very bad early and jumped on him to finish him: Smith was pretty rocked but landed a bomb to Fonfara's chin and crushed him.

I think that Smith fight was really a turning point in his career. After that he labored in a lethargix performance against a very shot Dawson and was smoked by Stevenson in the rematch.

Anyway, here's hoping the best for Fonfara's future.

Couldn't agree more. He took a couple vicious beatings from Smith Jr. and Stevenson. Get out before you start taking more needless punishment and destroy your brain. Solid career. Wish him well.

Surprised he retired so early. Then again if your heart isn’t in it it’s probably not a good idea to force it. He was never truly elite but he picked up some good wins and was rarely if ever in a boring fight.

Met him once at UIC Pavilion. He wasn’t even fighting that night. He was just walking around talking with and posing for fans.
