One thing people seem to forget, or just not care about, is that these guys are PRIZEFIGHTERS. Ruiz took this fight because it was a guaranteed $100K ride, win or lose. I'm sure he went in to the fight with some degree of confidence in himself, but I'd wager that the check was more important than a win. Fights like these will continue to happen, because fighters fight to support themselves, despite what the average nerd who labels any fighter a bum for any reason thinks.

Because everyone involved with the event would be fined, and some likely arrested as well, since homeless people can't legally box for money without a license. Good paydays can keep being given to former champs who take fights on short notice though.
