Comments Thread For: Ward: Kovalev Not Same Fighter, But He'll Be Hard To Deal With

FRISCO, Texas Andre Ward doesn't consider Sergey Kovalev the same fighter he was before Ward and Eleider Alvarez beat him by technical knockout. Kovalev still is plenty good enough, according to Ward, to beat every active light heavyweight in boxing. Now that Kovalev has regained the WBO light heavyweight title from Alvarez, Kovalev is at least in position to secure 175-pound title unification fights against IBF champ Artur Beterbiev (13-0, 13 KOs) or WBC champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk (16-0, 13 KOs).

I’d be more worried of a Kov who is heavy handed but fights smart, not looking for the KO. He completely dominated on Saturday.

I agree. Kova isn't the same fighter he was when he DROPPED Ward and got robbed by the judges against Ward in the first fight, but he's still a threat in the division.

It's great seeing Kov box smartly. Even if he isn't a killer anymore, he has above average power to make opponents respect him.

Age tends to make fighters not as good as they once were. Kovalev is close to 36, so it makes sense to me that he isn't running through guys like he used to.

Ward is a great fighter but he is arrogant as all fk. Sorry bruh but bad living is what has deteriorated Kovalev, not you. The moment he set foot back in Russia for that Chilemba fight he's never looked the same. If you go back and look at the pics of Kova around that time, you'll notice the difference. He's happy but he's also looking blasted half the damn time. It's the same shhh that ruined Duran and countless others, the partying as an athlete has an expensive price tag.

                  Ward upping himself. It's nauseating.

"Kovalev is a great fighter now but he was better when I fought him".

                    ward sounds hella salty!!

NOT everyone is the same!! NOT everyone responds the same!! NOT everyone reacts the same!!

“He’s never gonna regain that,” Ward said. “When you go through what he went through in our two fights, when you quit like that, there’s a piece of you that’s always left back there. But he’s still good enough to deal with a lot of light heavyweights in the division.”

“It’s always in the back of his mind,” Ward said. “He’ll never fully get past that. I’m talking both [mentally and physically]. So again, there’s a piece of him that’s still back there in Las Vegas, from our second fight, still back there in Las Vegas, from our first fight, and still back there from his first fight with Alvarez. You don’t just [get] over that. But what he still has left is enough to deal with a lot of people in the division.”
