In 2018 we only had two PPV fights (Canelo vs GGG 2 and Wilder vs Fury) but in 2019 it seems like they'll be move PPV's than ever. PBC has already done one PPV this year and has another scheduled while Top Rank is doing Crawford vs Khan in April. I would expect PBC to do at least 3 more PPV's, not just the Wilder Fury rematch but also Pacquiao's next fight and the Spence Garcia winner's next fight as well. I'd also be willing to bet that Top Rank will try to do Lomachenko vs Berchelt as a PPV sometime before the end of the year. That means that by the end of 2019 we'll likely have had around triple the amount of PPV fights that we had last year, and the biggest active PPV draw (Canelo) isn't' even on PPV anymore!! Can anyone explain to me why this is happening?
Why are the there so many PPV's now? (America)

Couple of reasons. You can't put Wilder/Fury or Pacquiao on network TV with their guarantees. Pacquiao when he fights stateside always is on PPV, that's not changing. Wilder/Fury is a fight where both were guaranteed around 10M or more. You would have to use a big chunk of your budget for that fight. Not happening.
Now, fights like Spence/Garcia and especially Crawford/Khan should not be PPVs. But another case of their guarantees being too high for network fights. I bet Spence/Garcia will be making over 5M each and we know that is what Khan will be getting as well. Still, you would like these fights to not be on PPV.
And Schaefer brought up a great point on Canelo leaving to DAZN. He was the biggest PPV fighter out there but him leaving left some openings for other fighters. Two slots a year are open because he's gone.
There were a few reasons why we only got two PPVs last year. GGG who has become a PPV fighter had to have essentially a last minute opponent in Vanes that you couldn't put on PPV. And Canelo testing positive killed the May PPV. Then you had Pacquiao fighting overseas and that killed another PPV. Back to GGG, him fighting Canelo actually took away from a PPV since they fought each other and not another opponent.
2018 was an anamoly in terms of lack of PPVs. In 2017 we got two Canelo PPVs, Ward vs Kovalev and GGG vs Jacobs/Canelo.
The only way we get less PPVs is if they start tanking from expectations. So far Wilder/Fury I and Pacquiao/Broner did not tank. But the next two coming up are the questionable ones. If both do over say 200k buys? Then yeah, the run on PPVs is not going anywhere.Comment

Value for money. In my opinion paying $120 for a whole year of boxing with fights most weeks and “ppv” fights within it makes sense.
Paying $75 for one night doesn’t.
I happily would support sensible pricing but will never buy anything properly for over the top pricing.Comment

Im getting DAZN for Canelo/Jacobs (at least trial and probably earlier for AJ Whyte since it'll be in the same month) Looking forward to seeing the quality. Lets not act like DAZN has put on anything remotely PPV yet (in the US) outside Canelo/Jacobs and nothing else on the horizon (tbd if GGG signs)Comment

Sure, but you were making it look like it was one or the other. Signing up for DAZN has nothing to do with buying PPVs or not.Comment
