UFC
Right now Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock are in the spotlight for fight fans all around. Although this may seem like a mismatch, it is a very significant fight for UFC. Shamrock's legacy is on the line along with Ortiz's future as an elite fighter. If the younger but extremely seasoned former LHW Champion proves himself dominant in this rematch with Ken, he will be in a better position to demand a another fight with the "Iceman" Chuck Lidell. For Shamrock this match tonight is all about his reputation in the **********. He can redeem his past substandard performances with an upset over the the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy". An upset is not likely in the eyes of many UFC viewers, but it would give him the option to go out with a **** or set him up with a couple of more fights. A second loss to Tito is a definite sign to hang up the green shorts and would discourage all the other 40 year olds to keep on bringing it on.
Boxing
Carrying the boxing torch this year would have to be Manny Pacquiao. His winning streak displaying his knockout abilities along with a whole country supporting him, has given him good momentum and position to be "The Man" in 2007. Assuming he finishes off his rival Eric Morales, he should be facing the winner of Barerra vs. Juarez. By the end of 2007 he may be contemplating moving up in weight. His current bragging rights are the historical victory of Morales (first KO of EM) and his destruction of over a handful of Mexican fighters.
In a strange way Pacquiao may have received the torch this year from Bernanrd Hopkins. In Manny's last fight he showed craftiness similarly displayed by the legendary executioner. Simply Mysterious!
Jermaine Taylor, Winky Wright, PBF, Coralles, and Castillo are the top dogs in boxing but each have displayed lack of professionalism or hunger to fight the best. Whether they were caught overweight on fight night, spitting out a mouthpiece twice during a fight, slacking of in the later rounds, or worst of all, complaining or talking about money. All of us have learned at some point in our working lives that it is rude to talk about money/salaries on the job (especially in front of fans). Today's fighter's are telling the media that they will fight for a certain amount or avoiding the best contenders because it is a good business decisions while they should be trash talking or challenging the best. That would attract more fans and the money will follow.
