Joey Spencer potential

Really hard to tell with who he has fought so far, but he was a very good amateur and supposedly held his own with the likes of JRock and Khan in sparring. Now, sparring is sparring and he's only 18 so who knows how hard they were going at him when he was say 16 or 17.
But he definitely seems to have nice skills for his age. He wants a title shot in 2020 but that's definitely not going to happen. Slow down kid, have to fight someone with a pulse first.Comment

I'm a big Michigan boxer supporter since that's where I'm from & think Spencer is the best guy coming out of Michigan right now. Leon Lawson III is #2 btw so keep an eye out for him although I think he needs more work & probably needs to get used to his body a lil more cuz he had a growth spurt that took him from like 5'8 or something like that to 6'4 in like a year I think.
As to Spencer I think he's a talented cat who's got the drive to succeed & I think he probably can garner some mainstream appeal with his demeanor which is professional out of the ring, appearance that might get him some sorta Ryan Garcia ladies & gay dudes following & overall ability to sell himself. Its far to early to say how far he can really go with any confidence doe & it probably will be for another year, 18 months I imagine before he's fighting some marginal prospect type guys or crafty vets that will expose his holes or lack of them when he's gotten a lil more seasoning & shows how he reacts to guys who don't fall down in the first 3 rounds.
So if Spencer was a stock I'd be investing in him cuz the ROI could be huge, but we know a ton of guys who looked decent to good for 15-20 fights til they got to fighting real guys for who boxing is their career, & not these bs low level opponents Spencer has been fighting (& he's supposed to be fighting still so that's no diss or anything) thus far, that never touched the top 20 let alone the top ten or a belt.Comment

LOL yea agree 1000%.
Some of these young cats on the come up wanna get there so much faster then guys of the past. Idk whats up. And I got zero problems with that when they are young to the pro game, but had a few hundred open fights, did great at the highest levels & are 25, 28 you know mid 20's-ish & have some maturity along with experience boxing at high levels (Usyk, Loma & Rigo are poster boys for that). But these 18, 19 year old guys have usually not even got THAT many open fights on their record & sometimes only like 1 or 2 notable open division titles.
And the open division is a whole other world to what they've mostly seen in the 16, 17 & younger amateur boxing level. In the open division you are fighting men often times not boys as you are always fighting in non-open fights. I think that's skipping a massive step in their growth by turning pro so young & not a lot of guys can do that & be fast tracked successfully so they need more time in the pro game to grow.
All that said I don't think Spencer will be fighting for any belt people care about in 2020. His team will guide him intelligently & with patience I'm fairly confident in saying.Comment

For sure, Haymon isn't going to rush Spencer to a title shot and may be hesitant for any of his young studs to get rushed to a title shot after what happened to Lubin. Lesson learned there even though that could have just been a case of getting caught with a great shot while being cold.LOL yea agree 1000%.

But I will say this, US has so much good young talent right now. A lot of the young prospects and even current amateurs could really go. And yes, for some reason they are ALL talking title shots right now lol. Stevenson/Haney/Lopez all want title shots in their next couple of fights and you have Spencer already wanting one next year when he hasn't even fought anyone.Comment

Gonna be interesting to see who can hang & who can't hang whatever happens if they get a title shot early thats for sure. And worse learning experiences can be had then coming up short in your first title shot so fair play + respect to anyone daring to be great so early & coming up short. For sure, Haymon isn't going to rush Spencer to a title shot and may be hesitant for any of his young studs to get rushed to a title shot after what happened to Lubin. Hell I was thinking Floyd fighting Genaro for his first belt back in the day with just under 2 years in the pro game was a risky move & look how that turned out that night & overall so a young cat going for a title & winning it so young & early into his pro career could be the first step of greatness for that guy.
Of them all I think Teofimo shows himself to be the most special guy so far, but idk that I can envision him beating Loma anytime soon. Might be more reasonable for him to move to 140 where there are some less proven guys & potentially could be a loose belt to grab at some point.Comment

Top Rank moved Floyd and DLH extremely fast because those were just day one first ballot HOF talents. Both had the "it" factor and TR just knew they would come through in their first title shots. But they usually don't give their youngsters title shots until they REALLY feel like they are ready. Lopez and Stevenson will be putting a lot of heat on them so let's see which one gets a shot first.Gonna be interesting to see who can hang & who can't hang whatever happens if they get a title shot early thats for sure. I've been on record saying Lopez next year beats Lomachenko if they fight but not sure how TR will play this situation out. That's what I'm interested in seeing unfold.Comment
