IMO Calzaghe and Kessler need to unify if Kessler beats Beyer.Calzaghe is the champ at 168 but there needs to be an undisputed champ at 168.As far as I know there has never been an undisputed super middleweight champion. There has been a unified champ Ottke (IBF & WBA) and of course Calzaghe (IBF & WBO) but there needs to be an undisputed champion.

Kessler is not the champ til he beats Calzaghe or chases him out of the division/into retirement. I'd love to see Kessler whoop Beyer and bring on Calzaghe vs. Kessler for all the marbles

If he retires with a win over Kessler, his legacy is safe.
not dissing nobody in this thread but i find it kinda funny how peoples views have changed.
before the lacy fight he was this bum who hasnt fought ne noteable people etc and lacy will ko him inside 4 rounds.
then after the fight the british people rubbed it in the lacy fans faces and then the comeback was lacy was far too green etc
but now calzaghe has got a legacy to retire with and could go down as an all time great

And the way i see it is if Calzaghe wants to go down as the SMW best ever or even a great in the sport he will have to fight and defeat Kessler! AND im a Joe fan but feel he doesnt fight the top notch people, and still think he will go after that BUM Tarver and other wash-ups but i hope im WRONG!

lacy was not green, he was a chump that lost badley.

Think about what Lacy has actually done. A loss always forces people to reevaluate a fighter's status. Who did Lacy ever beat? No one really, just like Calzaghe. Calzaghe does not suddenly get a legacy because he beat one guy that was young and inexperienced. Calzaghe still has more to prove, because as of now, all he's done is beat a few over the hill guys, and a green Lacy.

Most of the Lacy hype was because it was another America v Britain thing. You have to back your guy when it's a nation war kinda thing.

Good post, except the "Lacy was GREEN" part. This is something that the Calzaghe haters started spreading around after the fight to soothe their bruised e-egos.

Lacy has been fighting since he was 8 years old. He had somewhere in the neighborhood of 250 amateur bouts, with an incredible record. He was a reigning, defending world titlist who had blown through the best in the division. He just ran into someone who was in another class, matched up perfectly with his style, and was stronger than him. Lacy still beats almost any SMW out there, probably. The Lacy is green thing is something that was invented after the loss to Calzaghe, brought on by the shock of complete and utter domination that went on, which nobody, I don't even think the Brits, expected.

But yes, on topic, I think Calzaghe should start to focus on Beyer before he starts making the money mega-fights that he's eyeballing at 175. Becoming undisputed at 168 and retiring undefeated, especially if he moves up and gets a big win at 175, would be historical and would make him arguably the greatest SMW of all time. Certainly in the top 3.

I say that regardless of who wins a fight between beyer and Kessler, JC 'd better call him out the very evening og the fight.
In fact, It would look good if Joe would come out already now and claim first picks on the victor.

If he ducks a chance to fight for the undisputed title, how can we respect him?

Assuming Kessler gets past Beyer he'll go straight after JC and thats going to make Joe very uncomfortable. Joe is going to have to fight or come up with some whopper excuse
