Time is a very valuable commodity for athletes. 100+ amateur fights is a waste of time.

Some of the best boxers had more than a 100 amateur fights. As long as they start early enough, that amount is going to be beneficial.

Yes. Get them amateur fights in before you reach 18, imho.

5 yrs is nothing to sneeze at. That's at least 12 fights. It would have moved him along faster and got him those elusive fights.

Water under the bridge. Hopefully no other boxer, who's serious about making a living at it, wont waste time fighting so many amateurs.
Well he made more money in his career than the vast majority of boxers who are serious about making a living at it. From that standpoint, he’s a huge success. He just lacked the type of great fights we want as fans.

Most of of it Nelo money. He could live like a king with those paydays alone.

If he has any plans on winning a title again, he better get in there with some of these young bucks before arthritis sets in.

Fighters who turn pro at 18 face the possibility of burn out or being matched too tough early. If you’re moving a fighter, you want him to peak at the right time. Ggg didn’t get that late of a start...he was 24 when he turned pro. He just spent years in obscurity. He didn’t make his hbo debut until he was 30, and even then he had plenty of time to line up good fights, but that part didn’t happen until it was probably a bit late.

If a person isn't cut out for a life in boxing, it won't take long to find out and no amount of amateur fights will change this.

Start early and hope you have what it takes or start late and be cursed with wondering what if. imho

That’s enough...fighters work their entire career for just one payday like that.

I don’t think it’s in his plans to chase belts and work his way back up the rankings. He’s past his prime and has had the taste of big money events...he should look for that or retire imo. Not making a deal for a 3rd canelo is a bad start...if he actually had any power to make it happen. For all we know gbp never had the intention of doing that fight in may.

Nelo has already had a fight and one coming up soon. GGG has been pretty quiet since Sept. Shouldn't take this long to make a move.

In other countries, amateur accolades are a big deal, so I can understand why guys would stick around. I’m not sure they’re fighting 300-400 times to find out if they’re cut out for boxing...they’re probably facing the very best in the world relatively early on and just keep repeating it.

Like I said, ggg had plenty of time for a great pro career, he just didn’t have the big fights for various reasons. Ggg needed those fights to happen from about 2012 on...instead he faced lacklustre opposition for the next 4+ years. A lot could have happened during that time.
