He became hated for the things he says and does as a greedy boxing promoter.Things like buying the respected ring magazine and using that magazine to give boxers he promotes higher rankings and help promote them. He is also supected of buying judges for important fights his best boxers are fighting in.

As for Oscar situation, not really sure but recently he been running his mouth a lot about other business like talking about Dana White and Mayweather when he should focus on his own business and issues

He verbally trashed Chavez when Chavez retired in the corner against him and then quit in the corner himself against Pacquiao.

De La Hoya might be one of the most hated people in Boxing currently.

However, there was a time when he was the "Golden Boy" and was well respected.

So, what went wrong?

When he became a promoter. It's virtually impossible to be a promoter and universally liked.

The small time promoters are not hated, because they are unknown.

Arum/DLH/Haymon/Dana White/King/Hearn ...no one powerful promoter gets a pass.
