and If im not mistaken Hunter has not made another champion since Ward.
Not sure where the salt is coming from, tbh, but that's on you.

Ward is definitely the prized pupil, but don't disrespect the work that Hunter has done in working to redeem Berto, Angulo, Khan, Mares, Fonfara, and Andre Dirrell. And don't ignore the work he's currently doing with Mario Barrios, Tony Yoka, Joshua Temple, and the other young prospects working with him.

Who are these fighters under Virgil Hunter who simply took beatings? lol.

But hilarious how he is overrated when he is taking on flawed fighters towards the end of their prime or flat out just out of their prime.

What exactly was he supposed to do with Berto? Sure didn't make him worse.

Khan had arguably his two best performances with Hunter against Collazo and Alexander.

Angulo gave Lara hell before his face broke.

So I'm not getting the Hunter hate. What often times determines if a trainer is good or not is who they train and when they train them. I bet if he had Andre Dirrell from day one, he would have made him into a champion. Is Hunter the best trainer out there? No, I definitely wouldn't say that but let's not act like he's been dealt the best hand either.
To not have Virgil Hunter in that "best trainer out there" conversation is a disservice though.

Say what you want about his "defensively aware first" preferred style, Virgil Hunter has shown himself to be one of those few coaches who can take any fighter, of any style, and maximize what that fighter can do well (while also being defensively aware).

Naasim Richardson, Robert Garcia (his style is so focused on the fundamentals that things translate well enough), Teddy Atlas, Virgil Hunter, Buddy McGirt, Barry Hunter out of Head****ers, German Caicedo, and a few others.

As great as Freddie Roach is, if he doesn't have an offensive fighter who likes to press the fight, the tactics he coaches don't seem to work. similar for Abel Sanchez, Floyd Sr, and a bunch of other one-style coaches.

virgil hunter is one of those trainers that can talk. if you listen to him talk boxing, you'll think he's the best trainer out there because he's good with his words. same with naazim richardson.

I think he does better building a guy from the ground up, than working with an already establish fighters

Virgil is overrated and underrated at the same time. He's not the best trainer in the world, but he's good at developing fighters obviously. He can't turn an already good fighter into a great one. In fact many times he makes them worse. You can't learn his style within 1 training camp.

He's underrated by people blaming him for his fighters losing however. He gets guys that have already been knocked out and damaged like Khan, Fonfara, Berto, Mike Dallas Jr., Chad Dawson, etc because they want to learn some defense. Offensively Virgil isn't great though, and those guys have nothing to hold off their opposition. So while they are defensively sound, they get walked down often.

At the end of the day, there's nothing any trainer could do to resurrect those guy's career.

Eddie Reynoso is bad. Lord, I wouldn't let him wrap hands.

Floyd Sr is pretty bad. Horrible in the corner .
