    A few questions.

Since I find myself watching a few boxing matches on ESPN Classic right now. I've got some questions.

    1. What is the general opinion on guys like Micky Ward and Angel Manfredy?

    2. Why are the majority of their bouts only 10 rounds?

    3. While reading on box rec I noticed this "Augustus penalized one point in 8th for spinning himself out of a clinch." Why is that against the rules?

    4. Why did Micky Ward retire?

For some reason I thought all fights were 12 rounds and never really understood the 10 rounders.

I guess he was pathetic or something because I don't see what's wrong about spinning yourself out of a clinch.

Oh, ok. I didn't know that he was 37.

            1. Micky Ward was a tough journeyman fighter who fought them all. Judah, Gatti, Phillips, everyone. He had a granite chin and a paralyzing left hook to the body. His drawbacks came from his tissue paper skin and lack of defense. He was only stopped once, and that was from a horrid gash suffered in his only stoppage loss against Vince Phillips. He will best be remembered for his epic trilogy against Arturo Gatti and his compubox record shattering performance against Emanuel Augustus.

Angel Manfredy was about as much hype as one can get. He burst out of nowhere when he stopped Arturo Gatti on a cut in 1998 during a stretch in Gatti's career where he just seemed unable to secure a W. He had good moves and heart, but lacked teh big punch and a chin. He was blown out in 2 rounds by Mayweather, demolished by Corrales, and was in a borefest against Spadafora. The last time I saw him, he was making Courtney Burton look like a superstar on FNF. His alcohol problems and internal demons really ****ed up his career bad.

            2. The majority of the aforementioned fighters fights are only ten rounds because neither had been a world champion. The only fights that go 12 are bouts that are for title belts, something that those guys didn't get too many of.

            3. Emanuel Augustus was penalized for "spinning out of a clinch" against Courtney Burton in 2004. In that instance, the referee who has since retired after the outrage of the controversial handling of the fight, penalized Augustus for spinning his opponent, when that never occurred. Augustus was taking Burton to school, so the corrupt MI commission did everything in its power to help Burton get the win. That fight was one of the most disgusting exhibitions of injustice I have ever seen in my life, and severely tarnished the credibility of that state's commission.

            4. Prior to the first Gatti fight, Ward said that if he lost he would retire. Micky Ward won that fight, but in the second fight he took a fearsome beating en route to a points loss. After that fight, he promised the third fight would be his last, and he kept true to his word. After that fight, he began to experience difficulty with his vision, having blurry vision and seeing spots. I'm not sure if he has since had that problem corrected, but the many ring wars he had took its toll. Micky Ward was not a great fighter, but will be remembered for his heart and will. Not too many fighters nowadays give as much every night as did "Irish" Micky Ward.

            I hope that was sufficient.

Alot of fighters start out fighting 4 or 6 rounders for the first couple years and then move up to 8 and 10 rounders.Title fights are 12 rounds.

A fight is not slated for 12 rounds, unless there is a title at stake - whether it is some fringe title like the WBC Continental Title, or the major WBC belt.

                  That was perfect, thanks.

I felt that there was something wrong with that penalty.

Could you also clear this up for me?

On boxrec I've see these two things where the "ko" or "ud" is usually.

"RTD" and "TD" What does that mean? Oh yeah, just to refresh, "MD" is majority decision right?

lol I can't believe I've forgotten this much..
