I mean apples and oranges comparison no? Canelo is obviously WAY more popular than Joshua stateside. Canelo has this market locked up. The argument for Joshua being more popular is worldwide, not in the States. And Joshua's fight took place in the afternoon, not during primetime. If he fought Miller at MSG instead of Povetkin to kick off DAZN, his numbers would have been much better and he would have attracted more subscribers.

His name to the casuals stateside is tied with the Wilder showdown. He's not going to get those casuals interested when he is fighting in the afternoon against Povetkin who is also unknown here. And definitely wouldn't get them interested in a streaming service they had never heard of.

Correct, but the rights open up in 2021. There are different types of rights to the NFL though. There are TNF games which was just done recently and then rights to the MNF games as well as the CBS/FOX games.

          Nice article on the situation:

So the move really is starting to pay off.

It's going to be hard to get those casuals that downloaded the app to keep paying $10 a month for something that's just boxing.

It's one thing to have the masses pay for Netflix, which has all kinds of movies and tv shows. It's another to have something of almost the same price that will only feature boxing.

In any case, good job on them for this initial success. Good on Canelo for bringing in the masses, in spite of the opposition getting blasted in 3 rounds.

The last time a canelo fight was free well sort of let's just say not PPV was when he fought Kirkland on regular HBO after they signed Canelo away from showtime. That fight avg 2.2M viewer's. For comparison ESPN just last week had their second highest tv ratings and it drew 1.8M viewers and was celebrated as monster ratings. Canelo drew way more and on HBO which is in 1/3 the amount of homes as ESPN and is premium channel that costs you what 15-20 bucks? While ESPN is part of your basic cable subscription. And Canelo is a far bigger superstar today then he was when he fought Kirkland. You got millions already willing to pay 75 bucks PPV every time he fights now make that shyt free or 9.99 of course DAZN gonna up subscribers for his fights.

Joshua is a big deal in the UK but his fights were drawing only 300K live viewer's in the US on Showtime before the deal with DAZN. It's just not in the same league.

Let's put Joshua on primetime in the states though to truly see his name value. His replays on those said fights would still do in the mid 400ks which is more than some live SHO cards. I'd bet if Joshua fought on primetime on SHO, he would get close to the million mark, or at least in the 800k range.

Your TV downloads the app most TVs have some sort of Android software running the smart TV features in the background. Other then Android or IOS only app store is ROKU. I wonder what the Roku channel download numbers for DAZN were. But unless you got a Roku tv if you downloaded the DAZN app on any device including your TV it is falling under IOS or Android download bucket.

                    That's huge news.
But other things include how many download the app than didn't keep it after the fight.

Will Canelo keep them interested with DAZN or will it just be downloaded every time he fights?

As stated already, paying $10 bucks a month for pretty much just boxing and lower level MMA is quite a bit for casuals who only watch big fights. They aren't keeping subscribers with only those two sports. Just not realistic. But what they rely on is some of those subscribers forgetting to cancel after the month trial is up and keeping them that way.
