Is Ben Davison getting too much credit?

First off, I like Ben Davison and I think he definitely deserves credit for aiding Fury in his recovery both physically and mentally. But you see some people like Tris Dixon suggesting he has done an incredible job as a trainer in the sense he has developed Fury as a fighter and created some tactical masterpiece against Wilder.

As a trainer did he really add anything to Fury’s arsenal? Fury used the same boxing intelligence and ring IQ he’s always had to befuddle and outbox Wilder for the majority of the fight. The tactics he used during the fight were exactly the same as he used in many other of his big fights.
And you can’t say he’s improved Fury as fighter either, he was far more polished and disciplined under Peter Fury IMO. All the skills he showed off against Wilder had been developed long ago by his uncles Hughie and Peter not Ben Davison.

He helped a former drug using, suicidal, obese man prepare for Deontay Wilder and sharpened him enough to have him avoid all but 2 right hands.

Most top fighters have the tools but it takes a good trainer to sharpen them and work on them. This was one of Fury’s best performances to date and it’s no coincidence. His conditioning was top notch and he was supremely prepared. This is a 250 pound (ish) giant who’s preparation matched his will and that combination allowed him to not just come back from the dead, but keep fighting.
Fury believes in him and himself and sometimes that is the catalyst for everything in order to motivate and learn

I think that if you really understood what a trainer/boxing coach does, and you watched that fight, you wouldn’t be asking these questions or talking like this.

If there was such an award, Ben Davidson should get trainer of the year.

I somewhat disagree, I don’t think Fury was in all that great shape, the reason Wilder had success was Fury began to gas after 8 rounds, he was in much better physical condition against Klitschko.
I think Davison deserves huge credit for aiding Fury’s recovery from being a unhealthily obese man into someone who became re-motivated and re-focused enough to become the best HW in the world once again.
But he didn’t really add anything to Fury as a fighter.

1st off the thread starter has given Wilder plenty of credit even though he looked like a rank amateur, clueless and he lost. Im sure if youve got so much credit to give to Wilder for being made to look **** you could afford some more credit to Ben Davison coach of the winner.

2nd of all Fury did loads of little things against Wilder that he had trained on because of Wilder and how he fights. That wasnt just same old Fury doing exactly the same thing. Yeah he twitches and stuff but thats his style, they are his techniques but thats not it, thats not the full package. He did loads of things to negate Wilders threats that he did differently against Wlad because he has his own set of threats.

I saw somebody questioning the lines he chose to walk back against Wilder compared to the Wlad fight. Wlad throws straights, Wilder throws wide. Completely different but somebody was scratching their head as to why Fury wasnt doing the same thing. Come on eh?

What exactly did Davison add to Tyson Fury as a fighter then?

It sounds like you don’t know what you’re talking about...

Before the fight i mentioned that fury like floyd doesn't need a trainer per se, they spot their own mistakes amd have an idea of what they're doing/going to do.

                WTF are you talking about?
When did I give Wilder credit???
He looked pretty poor IMO, but he did have more success against Fury than any other HW was including Wlad. You could give him that I guess

                Moronic statement...

That’s exactly what I think! Fury’s own boxing IQ is what allowed him to outbox Wilder not guidance or instruction from Davison.
