It’s too much work to unify

I would suspect 99% of boxing fans want a single champion in each division but tonight with Lomo proved how ridiculous and dumb it is to unify.

AJ will eventually either be the undisputed hw champ or lose his belts to the man that becomes the undisputed. This will happen because the sanctioning bodies want the tens of thousands AJ will pay so he gets left alone.

We know Usyk is undisputed for now but it doesn’t make sense for fighters to do it.

Mikey wins the IBF and held 2 belts then gets stripped so now Lomo at a minimum has to fight 2 guys to be undisputed assuming he doesn’t get stripped himself for trying.

It’s ****** to try unify because the alphabet boys will always find a way to take the straps back.

It's incredibly hard for guys to unify without question. I respect guys trying to unify, though. It's the best, surest way to ensure that you can lay claim to being the best in your division.

Any real boxing fan knows, it is the quality of opponents and not alphabet soup. Guys can become undisputed, especially with 17 divisions. If you become undisputed, than almost all of your fights are mandatories. Titles help a fighter seem better than he is, but once you are on a certain level, belts don't mean a thing.

I remember Floyd giving up a belt, just cause he wasn't going to pay a sanctioning fee. Makes sense, rather a Floyd fight was for a title or not did not effect how much money the fight made.

Everyone needs to just stop calling the WBA and WBO real belts. The WBC and IBF are the only real ones. And it really should just be the IBF as the WBC plays favorites too. They normally do try and get the best to fight each other though. The WBC just plays favorites really. The WBA and WBO are both bought and paid for by the promoters. Fighters don't earn rankings for them, they buy their ranking.

Besides, other than Mikey who the heck else is there at lightweight??? No one. If you are gonna fight a gatekeeper, it looks a little better to beat one that managed to become a paper champion.

Was thinking about this today while watching Holyfield Lewis I.

Nothing has changed from back then. So many people have a vested interest in keeping them separate.

We're still no closer to resolving the alphabets. Gut feel says prizefighting will be banned before we ever see it legitimised.

Just gone back and took a look... it's been almost 27 years since Holyfield was the Undisputed Champion. 27 years!

Bowe and Lewis both won the status in the ring but neither managed to make it back to the ring to defend all the belts.

This sport desperately needs cleaning up.

The cards all have to fall correctly for a fighter to unify, take Usyk for example, the super series was a big help to him, without it and with all boxing politics he'd probably only have managed to fight for 2 of the belts by now.

Same with Crawford, hed have never managed it if one of the other titles was with Golden Boy, PBC etc. Golovkin wasted years trying to unify the decision.

Loma could become undisputed next year but needs a few things to happen. Arum already got Commey/Chaniev on the Alvarez/Kovalev 2 undercard, so that unification should be possible. Then the WBC rests on what Garcia does, if he vacates then Campbell will be fighting for the vacant, and hed definitely be willing to fight Lomachenko.

Yeah agree. I love watching guys become undisputed, even unify titles. In this era of 4 belt and TV/promoter wars, it's hard to do though.

A fighter needs a bit of luck for everything to fall into place.

Even if you unify there will be a ton of mandatories that you have to dispatch as well. And there are more "world" titles every day.
