Did you actually watch these fights? Just repeating myths in boxing circles.

Its fashionable to call robbery these days.

I watched them as they happened, and several times in the subsequent days. De La Hoya lost both. He was greatly helped by the last round rally in the Quartey fight, but he still lost that one. Bazooka jabbed him silly for quite a while, and overall fought on the same level of intensity throughout. His lone fault was getting floored in the final stanza.

No one seems to remember that Quartey was coming from a 14-month layoff before that fight.

Should I even mention Mitch Halpern shamelessly stopping and admonishing Quartey for no reason after he had just knocked down De La Hoya and was starting to jump on him? To quote The Beatles, "I can try with a little help from my friends".

Lots of often ineffective flurries accompanied by the deceiving shouting of the audience is what won several fights for De La Hoya, including the one against Whitaker. This is what happens when the establishment decides you're the one.

And yet, even the establishment had doubts (usually solved in favor of Oscar):






I remember one of these boxing rags doing a u-turn on the Quartey fight. First they had Quartey winning, then they published an article in the following issue stating that, upon reviewing the fight, De La Hoya was the right winner.

Pitiful stuff, typical of the Golden Boy era. It's not my fault if fans are blind, or have feeble memories.
