What's your thoughts on Oliver McCall?

Former champion, but I remember him always being borderline for some reason. He never really got over the hump although he holds some pretty impressive wins:

Lance Whitaker - Good prospect at one time

Oh yeah, dropped prime Mike in sparring

He had some really good wins, but also many losses.... He was always there, but not quite there for me. What were your thoughts on him?

He's a badass. When he had that breakdown during the Lennox fight he didn't even give a **** if Lennox hit him and didn't flinch a bit.

I watched a video from a decade or two later where he explained that whole thing and it was sad to hear.

He had one of the best chins in the HW division ever. Very good boxer too.

He's most known for having a mental breakdown in the ring, at least to those young enough not to have been around when he was in his prime. The resume's not good enough to eclipse that one event unfortunately. He was good but not an ATG and not probably even a great 90's heavyweight, considering the talent pool at the time.

As far as if you take the measure of the man as physical natural ability, I would put him at the very top...Better potentially than Ibeuchi. Like the crazy Ibeuch....McCall was the perfect size for a heavyweight, not an extra unnecessary inch, One of the best beards, incredible aggression, murderous punching capability. McCall could have been one of those guys that comes around every 3 generations... One of the best ever.

He was just too wild, too crazy. Unable to stay focused. A focused McCall would blow through this division right now. His chin was such that he could take a Wilder shot, or a Joshua barrage. He was not deterred by getting hit, had quick feet, and was just big enough not to be overshadowed by a bigger guy but not so big that he could not be active.

I realize there is no proof of this given his record...But if you watch him at his best in the ring, he was scary good. Explosive punching, not that heavy handed approach, like a snake striking out. Other fighters known it also...He had mad respect in the gym for a reason.
