David Allen has been given an opponent ahead of his return on Saturday. The entertaining heavyweight, who stopped Samir Nebo in Newcastle last month after finishing off Nick Webb in a British title eliminator inside four rounds back in July, will be back in the ring this weekend.

I like David Allen. He is tough. He has some pop & can take a punch. He should take the Kevin Johnson route & become a solid journeyman fighter who will fight anyone. He already said he made enough money to buy a house so he might as well keep going a little longer. Make some money & travel the world. He doesn’t have to be elite to make some money in the sport. Rob Calloway & Ken Lakusta (2 time Canadian champion from my city) made enough money to open up gyms in their respective hometowns. Both fought a lot of big names & got to see some of the world. Kingpin is doing that now & no reason Allen shouldn’t do it. Lakusta fought Foreman in his comeback here in my city & also got in there with Tommy Morrison, Tua & Frans Botha. Allen is good enough to give top prospects & contenders decent rounds.

I think he knows he can be a good journeyman, as you've said hes alluded to making a nice bit of cash from it. Think it was getting him down getting beaten every other fight. Says he wants to have a decent crack at having a run, putting some wins together and see where it gets him. Dudes only 26, plenty of time for him to go back to the man for hire, getting smashed every other fight.

Derric Rossy, Monte Barrett, Obed Sullivan were fringe guys who made some money later in their careers once they knew they would not get to the next level. Jason Gavern, Brian Minto, Vinny Maddalone & Nicolai Firtha recently did the same. Kevin Johnson couldn't get any fights until he started playing the "doing just enough to lose" game. Then he was fighting all over Europe & Australia. I recall several fights on Box Nation where the commentators pointed out that Kevin Johnson was a much better fighter than he was showing. Oliver McCall was 24-5 when he upset Lewis for the WBC title. He had lost to a couple cans & had decision losses to Buster Douglas, Orlin Norris & Tony Tucker then he scored the big win over Damiani which lead to his title shot. He had also beaten Bruce Seldon. Maskaev was another late bloomer who went on to win a world title. I'm not saying Allen will do that but he certainly can make some money if he stays active. I don't see him ever getting much higher than C level with maybe a British or Commonwealth title victory at some point.
