Now if Joshua had agreed to face Wilder in September instead of Povetkin, the undisputed winner STILL would have had to face Fury to be the lineal champion.Comment

The lineal champion owns the lineage until he's beaten or until he officially retires, at which point the consensus #1 and #2 fighters fight to continue the lineage. Lewis retired and the lineage remained vacate for 5 years because the Klitschko brothers refused to fight each other. After Vitali took a hiatus, Wladimir Klitschko faced #2 Ruslan Chagaev to become the lineal/WBA/IBF/WBO champion until he was dethroned by Tyson Fury.

Fury officially retired from boxing which means he technically vacated the title for about 3yrs.
How does he go off and on to reclaim a title he vacated.Comment

To me this is not but BS. A retired lineal will choose the next lineal, Lolx. Is it a kind of title appointment or what?
A lineal champ is won in the ring and lost when you retire or refuse to defend it.
Lennox Lewis (1998–2001)
Hasim Rahman (2001)
Lennox Lewis (2001–2004; retired)
Wladimir Klitschko (2009–2015)
Tyson Fury (2015–2016; vacated)
Tyson vacated the title after retiring for about 3yrs.
Technically, as the unified champ, AJ should/is the lineal champ.
Tyson would not have been scared of Wilder, like Joshua is
so..... it doesn't count

I personally believe and it's also one of the ways of vacating the title when the holder retires or refused to defend.

bingo, there it is
Wilder is the lineal champ seeing that Joshua ducked him

Klitschko decided to fight Fury later that year. But just before they fought, Wilder put Klitschko on notice again, remember? (https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshkatzowitz/2015/11/10/deontay-wilder-i-could-beat-wladimir-klitschko-tomorrow/#10ce78be1fea). In an upset, Fury beat Klitschko to become the lineal/WBA/IBF/WBO champion. Then Fury challenged Wilder in the ring after the Szpilka fight...
Klitschko then chose Joshua as the easier, safer fight after a 2 and a half year layoff. Why do you think he didn't pursue a fight with Wilder that whole time? Fighting for the one belt he never possessed?Comment
