Derevyanchenko Manager: Andrade Pulled Out of Deal for 12/16
    By Keith Idec

There was almost a second meaningful middleweight fight made for December 16.

Keith Connolly, Sergiy Derevyanchenko’s manager, told BoxingScene.com that the unbeaten middleweight agreed to face Demetrius Andrade on the Billy Joe Saunders-David Lemieux undercard December 16 in Laval, Quebec. The deal was almost finalized, but Andrade withdrew from negotiations because the undefeated contender didn’t think he had enough time to prepare for such a difficult fight against Derevyanchenko (11-0, 9 KOs).

Negotiations began late in October, roughly seven weeks before an Andrade-Derevyanchenko fight would’ve taken place, not long after Andrade’s most recent bout. Andrade (25-0, 16 KOs), a former WBA super welterweight champion, out-boxed Alantez Fox (23-1-1, 11 KOs) to win that 12-round middleweight match by unanimous decision October 21 in Verona, New York...

“We were in the ninth inning of negotiations to fight Andrade and had agreed on pretty much everything,” Connolly said. “We were told by his people that he was ready and that he had agreed. But then, at the last second, he pulled out.

“He claimed he didn’t have enough time [to get ready], but these negotiations took place seven weeks before the fight date. So that’s plenty of time. If you think you’re gonna take the fight, you start training right away.”

Promoter: Andrade Accepted, Derevyanchenko's Side Didn’t Want It

Demetrius Andrade understandably is much more interested at the moment in fighting Gennady Golovkin.

Artie Pelullo, Andrade’s co-promoter, made it clear, though.....it was Sergiy Derevyanchenko’s handlers, not Andrade’s side, that didn’t want that intriguing middleweight fight when HBO Sports’ Peter Nelson offered it a second time for some time within the first quarter of 2018.

Ukraine’s Derevyanchenko is promoted by Lou DiBella and managed by Keith Connolly.

The overall package HBO first offered for Andrade-Derevyanchenko was $800,000, which would’ve been split equally among the two teams had they fought December 16 in Laval, Quebec, as part of the Billy Joe Saunders-David Lemieux undercard. HBO’s second offer was for a total of $500,000, which means each side would’ve had to take $150,000 less for a fight that would’ve been placed on an unspecified undercard.

Philadelphia’s Pelullo disputes, too, that Andrade (25-0, 16 KOs) wasn’t willing to fight Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10 KOs) when the fight first was offered late last fall.

Andrade wasn’t training, Pellulo said, because Nelson informed him following Andrade’s 12-round victory over Alantrez Fox on October 21 that there wouldn’t be another HBO bout available for the 2008 Olympian for the remainder of 2017. Andrade, of Providence, Rhode Island, also spent time in the Atlanta area after the Fox fight with his high school football coach, who died of cancer.

“So then Peter comes back says, ‘You want the fight? There’s only $500,000 in the fight,’ ” Pelullo said, referring to the second offer for the first quarter of 2018. “I said, ‘No problem. We’ll take the fight.’ Lou couldn’t deliver [Derevyanchenko] because Connolly would not take the fight [for less money].
… I called Andrade and he said, ‘Yes, take the fight.’

Here is a statement from Sergei D's promoter

DiBella doesn’t think Andrade’s team truly wanted the fight.

“That’s got nothing to do with why the fight didn’t happen,” DiBella said regarding any acrimony among Derevyanchenko’s handlers. “I never believed they wanted the fight, frankly. I called Peter Nelson to tell him we were in [for December 16] within the deadline we were given to work everything out. I got a text back that said Andrade was available. Then, five minutes later, Artie called me and told me that Andrade wasn’t available. That was for December. That’s what happened then. The money for them to fight in December was fine.

“And then the offer was reduced by three-eighths this year,
It’s also very difficult when you’ve made a deal with a fighter at a certain number, to reduce that total pot by three-eighths and think that it’s gonna be easy to close the deal.

So for all of yall who are confused by walls of text here is a summary.

        1. Demetrious Andrade and Sergei Derevyanchenko were made an offer for 400k each to fight in December. Derevyanchenko accepted the fight but Andrade turned it down because he didn't feel like he had enough time to train.

        2. Later on HBO made another offer for the fight but this time the total pot was only for 500k so each fighter would only get 250k. Demetrious Andrade accepted the fight. Sergei Derevyanchenko turned it down because there wasn't enough money.

        3. One group of GGG haters insist that Sergei Derevyanchenko would have taken 250k or less to fight GGG on short notice, for a bigger fight with more meaningful stakes when as the mandatory Derevyanchenko was under no obligation to settle for chump change. Those people who suggest otherwise are either delusional or purposely spreading lies to make GGG look bad to people who don't know better.

So you believe Andrade's promoter and I believe Team Dervy! Why? Because Andrade has a history of pulling out of fights, for some reason or the other! Lastly, this:

Demetrius Andrade secures release from promotional contract with Pellulo, DeGuardia
          June 28, 2018:

One of the most talented fighters in the world is now a promotional free agent.

Demetrius Andrade, who long has been inactive, reached an agreement on his release from the promotional contract he signed with Joe DeGuardia and Artie Pellulo, it was announced Thursday.

The middleweight contender is now free and clear to sign with any promoter, and according to sources, Top Rank, Matchroom Sport and Al Haymon all have already expressed interest. Terms of Andrade’s release were no disclosed due to a confidentiality agreement, but it’s expected he bought out the remainder of his contract.

Again, just like with GGG, Dervy wanted the fight, Andrade and GGG didn't! If you don't want to call it a duck, that's fine, but don't try to paint Dervy as some sucka! Dervy was ready, willing, and able for both Andrade and GGG!

That's all well and good as long as you ignore the fact that Dervy didn't want the Andrade fight unless it was for a certain amount of money. If he didn't want 250k for a smaller and less meaningful fight you expect me to believe he'd accept that kind of money for a bigger and more meaningful fight. You expect me to believe he'd be willing to do that even though as the mandatory challenger he could have held firm and waited for the purse bid which would have certainly increased the fight pot and Dervy's purse.

Dervy would've accepted whatever to fight the guy with ALL THE BELTS! That's the kind of fighter he is! Andrade said he couldn't be ready! GGG said he needed more time! Sergiy said "Let's Go!" Don't put it on Dervy! Very disrespectful! WBC has ordered GGG vs. Charlo! Tell your boy to MAN UP! NO excuses!

Easy to say after the fact. We all know Sergei D is all about that money. He killed his chance to fight GGG where even a loss makes him relevent. Look at Willie Monroe. He managed to parlay quitting in the ring against GGG into title shots with Billy Joe Saunders and Jermall Charlo. Sergei D has a long road back to relevance. Shouldn't have been so greedy.
