This is interesting. And I am willing to bet that you can't just get a 1 month subscription, they'll have it set up so you have to buy a whole year's subscription, otherwise you could just buy a single month when there's a big fight you want to see.
If done right this could be great for boxing long term. The more the public gets to see big fights the more popular the sport will be.
We all know why we love boxing, but most of us older fans (I'm 46) fell in love with it watching free fights on network TV. It's the most compelling drama on TV, nothing comes close.
Well I wouldn't quite go that far, the UFC still have a PPV based business model, but boxing would appear to be moving away from that especially now that HBO stepped back from the sport entirely.
Lots of other sports have been streaming their events for years, especially the active but less popular sports like tennis.
For a small fight doing it on the platform is no issues, for a real fight Canelo will rightfully want more money than for the small one and what is the other guy going to make?
With PPV it is possible to entice a guy with real upside, if the fight does well at the box office then a guy can be cut in easily if the fight does well enough. They could obviously do something special where the big Canelo fights are not included live but a surcharge is added with the replays being available on the normal service maybe a day or two later.
Will be interesting to see how they play it, but as long as Canelo can keep winning they will find a way to make it work.
They over paid Canelo. Canelo need to fight good fighter to make Dazn deal worth while. If he starts losing then that deal is garbage.
How is he over paid? He’s 28 years old coming off a victory off a reigning mw king and p4p guy. His already enormous stock only grew from that.
He’s getting Canelo’s (assumption here, he’s been fighting a while) prime years, the most famous/money bringing boxer and literally an entire country/demographic that comes with him and will compliment AJ and vice versa. It’s worth it because he’s been fighting good fights. You seem bitter somehow. Canelo isnt an up and comer. He’s an established superstar. THE current superstar. He’s going to also make the rest of the stable more likely to be seen.
The ppv model as we know it is dying and thats a great thing. Youre never gonna get a new wave of fans when the big stars are paying 60/70 dollars for a ppv which isnt even stacked.
