Arum: "Mayweather is Terrified of Margarito"

Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum is a busy man as of late. Currently, the promoter is trying to put together a super fight between WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito and middleweight Winky Wright, while still trying to lure Floyd Mayweather, Jr. into a bout with Margarito. Arum told the Grand Rapids-Press that he feels Mayweather is legititmately scared of Margarito aa there is no reason the pound-for-pound king should not take the fight. [details]

Gotta give Arum credit, he's doing everything he can to get Mayweather to take this fight.

Mayweather has really painted himself into a corner here. His insistence that Margarito is a nobody who lost to Santos coupled with this career high payday offer theoretically make this an easy choice for him, take the cash and box his ears off and move on.

The notion that PBF is ducking Margarito is gaining steam (Dan Rafael is now on record as saying it's a duck after previously saying otherwise, and many others agree). He says it's an easy fight and he's really screwed if he takes it and goes through hell. What does he say then? He can't win here unless he takes the fight and dominates. Anything short of that makes him look bad...either as a coward (not taking the fight), as a humbled fighter (takes the fight and loses) or as overrated via his own words (winning in a tough fight).

I want to see FMJ/AM more than any other fight at this point for FMJ, but u have to be very naive to think a promoter as savvy as Arum (or King) will just let the best fighter in the world walk away with no strings attached. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find sex with no strings attached these days, so u know damn well it doesnt exist in the shady business world of boxing promoters. How can anyone think that Arum will just give FMJ an alleged $8MM to beat his hype machine, and then walk away?? This makes no since from a business stand point. Do u think Arum likes FMJ that much? Or better yet, why would he not want the best fighter in the world back in his stable? By having FMJ back in his stable, wouldn't be able to make the money back off FMJ's future fights? Certainly a promoter of his acumen is privy to FMJ's potential earning possibilities. I mean, isnt that the more likely scenario? FMJ paid $750K or so to get out of the contract as so his relationship with Arum would have no part in stalling the Hoya fight. Arum will be paying an alleged $8MM to get him back. All people hear is the money, but just becus possible contract clauses arent mentioned, doesnt mean they arent there.

Now, since Hoya has annouced that he will not be retiring and is still interesed in fighting FMJ next year sometime, dont expect FMJ to sign on for the alleged $8MM becus Hoya has already stated he wants nothing to do with Arum.

Well I seriously doubt he is terrified. It is quite obvious that he is not very interested in such a high risk, low reward opponent though.

You bring up excellent points, most people are to infatuated with Mayweather or dislike him so much they fail to see the different angles.
