Regardless of the parties involved, speaking strictly from a business standpoint, it makes no sense to meet prior to an event that will significantly impact negotiations. Bottom line, if the shoe was on the other foot Hearn wouldn't do it and the same people that criticize Wilder for this would wholeheartedly accept Hearns reasoning believing it to be sensible.
