That's absolutely true. Canelo did say he wasn't a real middleweight. When he decided to leave the junior middleweight division officially he skipped right over it to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at a 164lb catchweight with stiff rehydration penalties for JCC Jr.

Those are considered the best of the opposition Cotto fought since Trout.
