HBO had great expert commentators over the years. I liked Roy Jones Jr, Andre Ward, George Foreman, and Manny Steward.
Jim Lampley's punch-by-punch voice was electrifying; it essentially became synonymous with HBO Boxing. In a minor way, so did Harold Lederman's score cards. I much preferred Larry Merchant over Max Kellerman. At least Larry's pontifications came post-fight. It was easy to see who was coming from a journalist perspective (Merchant) and who was trying to up his stature as a broadcasting celebrity (Kellerman). Stephen A. Smith, though not on HBO, is another example of the latter.
But they all had their biases. I thought Ward and Steward were best at being objective.
I am glad we won't have to listen to that idiot doug Fischer and his actor mate super Mario anymore.....absolute bell ends.
As for kellerman what a mug , jones was ok and i use to like when he use to say ohhhhh when a punch lands....he gets really into it lol
Lamps is just lamps ...a great voice but has no idea about boxing
It ran it’s course but I always enjoyed Lampley & Merchant. Lewis great boxer but not so good on the microphone. My most memorable moment of Roy Jones on the mic was when Wlad Klitschko lost to Lamon Brewster he compared him to Butterbean. An insult that sure made him look ****** when you look back now. Foreman was my favorite. George always talked about those points in matches where the fighter was hurt & You would know he was speaking from experience. Never tooted his own horn like Lennox or Roy Jones. He also butted heads a lot with Merchant. When Merchant was way off he would call him on it. Liked Clancy & loved Steward. Kellerman was alright too.
I will definitely miss HBO Boxing - Lampley is/was an iconic voice in boxing. They all had their good and bad moments, sometimes things would even get heated like Roy vs Merchant in dramatic moments in Pac-Morales 1, or Foreman vs the rest when he would be go crazy when he saw OScar and his "bounce"; even Lennox had a classic line with the "he's a tough cookie from Youngstown!!" in Taylor v Pavlik 1. Steward and his OH MA GAWWD!! Sooo many great fights and calls came on these broadcasts
Anyway, I guess we've got Mauro Ranallo as the lead voice now - I'm giving him a chance and he's alright...just sometimes it seems like he'd rather be at an MMA or pro wrestling event, it comes across. Never had that issue when listening to Lampley
I've already missed the voices for years. Merchant and now Lampley. I only had HBO all these years for boxing. I will cancel in January. Only premium channel I will have is Showtime. For boxing
I like Roy, but he had an annoying habit. Lampley would ask him a question, like, is Kovalev done at 35. Instead of providing detailed analysis, he simply repeats, word for word, what Lampley said. Yeah, Kovalev is done at 35.
That's all he did was repeat their questions as statements !
This is sad news to me as well and I to will miss the voices. Despite their critics they really did do a nice and I am sad to HBO leave boxzing. This article brought back memories. Thank you to the entire HBO boxing staff and production team for 40 years of greatness.
