Whenever there is an undisputed or a unification bout, it supersedes the mandatory defense. Joshua didn't have to challenge Povetkin right away. It was done by choice. He could have easily delayed it by getting an extension to fight Deontay if he wanted it badly enough but didn't. He simply chose to challenge a diminished, shot, old and washed up Povetkin with no stamina or chin in order to avoid Wilder.

He did get an extension. But unfortunately, he couldn't get Wilder's signature on a contract. Povetkin is head and shoulders better than anybody Wilder has ever fought.
