Golden Boy will not be releasing PPV numbers for Canelo-Golovkin II

    Statement from GoldenBoyBoxing re 9/15:
We will not be releasing overall figures for the fight but between a terrific gate, a very successful linear PPV buy rate and an explosion in digital PPV sales, Canelo-Golovkin II was a more successful event than its predecessor

    - Kevin Iole, Yahoo

Fight promoter Golden Boy declined to provide an official figure, but an industry source well connected to satellite and cable systems placed the buys “between 1 and 1.1 million, definitely” not in excess of 1.1 million.

    Lance Pugmire, LA Times

Sceptic in me says it tanked. But I think theyre probably shopping the roster. Hiding the true value for the best bid

Coppinger and Pugmire both seem to be reporting 1.1 million buys. Still a great number, but less than expected. I was still thinking even as recent as yesterday that it would do 1.3-1.5 million buys. Guess not, but the promotion was pretty piss poor if we are being honest.

Now, with folks able to buy it online it throws a wrench to these numbers. So many people have cut cable that it is hard to quantify how many online sales there were. And the online pricing was the same as buying it through cable I believe.

Despite doing less than 200k cable buys, it only generated $2 million less than the first fight due to pricing it $10 bucks more. Hence why it was a good decision to up the price.

This is what we already know. Slightly less buys but they charged more this time.

It sounds to me that the fight didn't sell as good as it had originally planned.

If it did $1m or more that’s great for boxing

PPV probably tanked hard. There was no buzz leading up to the fight, ridiculous $84 price tag, casual fans thought the first fight was a robbery, and then Canelo failed a drug test. If they really did one million buys they would have released the numbers.
