The majority of people I've met in my lifetime view Ali positively, in contrast people's opinions of Mayweather have been highly negative.

Everybody knew who Ali was, not many know Mayweather.

Boxing was mainstream back then on free television, now it is on PPV so few watch these big fights

World population is currently 7.6 billion. With TV, the internet, things like Youtube, I think more people have heard of Mayweather and have hated him than any fighter ever.

LMAO go to any boxing channel and you will rarely see any video hit a million views.

They are videos of people dropping hot metal balls in eggs that get 10s of millions.

The vast majority of the people I work with have no clue who Mayweather is. They know Ali though.

But not everybody hated Ali. Growing up I've always heard Ali being viewed positively.

The amount of TV's in the world compared from then to now is probably a quarter (and that's being generous) of the current number.

From what I've seen the Chinese are pro-Pacquiao (leads me to believe they're anti-Mayweather), the Mexicans are anti-Mayweather, most Americans are anti-Mayweather, most people from the UK are anti-Mayweather, most people from Eastern Europe are anti-Mayweather etc.

It depends how old you are. If it was back before his comeback.

There is more TV and more choice. The Kardashians get more view that Floyd in a year than Floyd got in his 20 years. Back the the 60/70 you didn't have the internet, xbox, ps4 and everything else.

Ali crossed over to the mainstream, he was a celebrity, Mayweather isn't. He got no paparazzi chasing him.

Most the Chinese don't Mayweather, most people don't have a clue who he is.

And he has fanboys the world over.

If there was a top 500 list of the most hated people Mayweather would not be in it.

You are spending too much time on boxingscene, in the real world they don't care.

The opposite of Love isn’t Hate but Indifference. My opinion anyway. I mean both love and hate make $$$.

I would go with Jack Johnson because he lived hated & died hated.

Ali lived long enough to be turned into a saint-like figure like Nelson Mandela or Gandhi or something.

Floyd's definitely the most hated athlete of this era because of his success, arrogance, fighting style, personal issues, and racism.

Me personally, I can't stand Broner, Khan, and Chavez Jr. wayyyyyyy more than I hate Mayweather.

Those 3 guys are the absolute worst.

Canelo's getting close to that list as well.

                  Without doubt.
And now he's made a fortune of that fact.

Floyd is intensely disliked but has made a fortune out of it, so who laughs last laughs longest.

For me, guys like Khan and AB are worse. They talk a good game but deliver nothing.

Boxing definitely needs villains, look how someone as limited as Eubank Jnr made a few million out of the sport for knocking out a turkish barber and some Polish plumbers.

i don't really care one way or the other about the argument you guys are having, but what are all these "credible" lists/sites you are referring to? Please provide links.
