Comments Thread For: HBO Might Not Air Kovalev-Alvarez Rematch; Negotiations Ongoing

More and more, HBO is showing us that they're becoming
increasingly disinterested in making an effort to remain among
the top boxing networks. It's not as simple as it used to be
for them to throw money around and lock-up the top fighters.
As their ratings suffer and they tighten their purse strings
the competitive playing field is just getting bigger. The execs
at HBO don't know how to navigate the new landscape, and
they don't even seem to care anymore.
It's a shame because I miss the glory days, 20 years ago,
when Lampley, Merchant, and George Foreman were calling the
action, and Harold actually had fair and reasonable scorecards.
They'd wear tuxedos for big fights, and they made boxing seem
dignified and classy compared to what Showtime was presenting.
Col Bob Sheridan was like Boxing's version of the WWF's Jim Ross
and Ferdie Pacheco disn't always make much sense. Jim Grey has
ALWAYS been amusing, though.
Rant Over.

but it would be better if HBO still cared about boxing.

One day, boxing fans will talk about HBO like wrestling fans talk
about WCW. It's a different thing, but they were both powerhouses
that died because of mismanagement. WCW were at least trying to
hang on. HBO is content to let their boxing empire slowly fade away.
