I am upset Hearn/AJ are not fighting Wilder now and I am upset this appears to be orchestrated by Hearn to provide an excuse should he and AJ decide to swerve him again.
    You sound very biased.

the WBO have told talkSPORT.com that, as Povetkin is #1 in their rankings too, the bout also counts as their mandatory defence.

“Anthony Joshua is the WBO ‘Super Champion’ in the heavyweight division and will make his mandatory defence when he faces Alexander Povetkin on September 22,” revealed the WBO rep.

“Joshua has 18 months before he has to make his next mandatory defence.”
Wow, not the first time we've seen sanctioning bodies contradict themselves but damn this is pathetic. Hopefully they clear this up and confirm that the talksport quote is correct but I'm not holding my breath.

        The circus rolls on
Go and read the WBO rules, lol. Was looking up the split on the purse bid for Hooker-Saucedo, but you catch all sorts of nonsense about TV networks having a major say in mandatory challengers, no real rhyme or reason as to when final eliminators are called, promoters being allowed to simply pick "fighters deemed in good standing by the WBO" as mandatory challenger, and a host of other nonsense.

        Ridiculous really

Not with the refs. AJ always seems to get.

He does that because Top Rank runs the WBO and is exclusive to ESPN.

Goes to show the influence Hearn has due to the economic force AJ is. The WBO had repeatedly confirmed Povetkin as the mandatory, but now the story is changing so Hearn can justify the Whyte fight in April.

It's the WBO not the IBF, so I'm sure a big money fight with the Fury/Wilder winner in a unification will be enough to put aside a mandatory.

Mike Benson recently printed quotes from the WBO, who told him that the Povetkin fight would be a mandatory, so another one wouldn't be due for 18 months. So some mixed messages there, I guess we will have to see how it all transpires.

With Usyk being the superchamp he can jump up and claim that mandatory, but with a fight with Bellew looking likely, I doubt it fits into the mandatory time frame.
