The demise of German boxing

If Americans and other thinks that boxing is not on the same level as it once was in the USA, then take a look at boxing in Germany.

Think about what it once was. TV channels like ARD, ZDF, Sat.1 & RTL paid huge amount of money to get boxing.

All those TV stations don't broadcast boxing anymore and because of that the money and audience is gone.
Before millions of viewers watched the major fights.
Universum went bankrupt. The Klitschko Brothers and Sturm retired.
Abraham & Huck are like the only ones left from those times

Sauerland event has no title holders. They do have a TV deal with Sport1, but the money and ratings are no where near what they once where.

Germany used to be the first stop for most of the talent out of Eastern Europe but now on the back of GGG and others' success across the Atlantic they seem to be skipping that step and heading straight to America. Germany itself produces some decent fighters and can be considered a regional boxing power, but it was the foreign imports who had the scene really thriving over there for a while

Universum had a prime GGG under contract for years - an exciting, ambitious, former amateur star who was blitzing everybody they put in front of him.

But instead of handling Golovkin properly and turning him into a star in Germany, they basically stifled his career and sidelined him to protect Sturm. Even to the extent of bribing the WBA to bring back their "super" title at middleweight for Sturm so he didn't have to fight GGG.

With hindsight, that was a terrible business decision by Universum.

The corruption there probably has a lot to do with it. Germans ain't ******.

they just had no luck with the bunch of prospects following the abraham, sturm, brähmer, hernandez, huck (and klitschko) era.

Sauerland backed Feigenbutz, Culcay and Zeuge to be the next in line, but they didnt work out at all.
Im not even sure who else were supposed to make it during those years.

Currently they are somewhat in the phase of building up new guys. SES boxing has Kabayel, who has a decent win over chisora and looked capable in that fight. They also have Tom Schwarz, but I think he is going to be exposed sooner than later (watch his last fight, it was a freak show).

Sauerland is building up Abbas Baraou, bronze medaillist in the last world championship, who has a boxing style suited for the pro game and a couple other prospects (Bunn, Bauer, Mann).
Im not sure, if they intend to make Hrgovic a star in germany, but he is signed to Sauerland and curently is fighting all over the place.

SES boxing also has Mohammad Raabi under contract who won bronze at the olympics and gold at the world championship in Doha. By doing that he beat Josh Kelly and Daniyar Yeleussinov.
But again, I dont know if they want to make him fight out of germany.

If they build up good fighters who can compete at world level, I am pretty certain that they will be able to get a new TV deal.
