There's no protocol in stopping a count the second a fighter spits out his mouth piece that I know of. And in my opinion, that wasn't so much him giving up as it was trying to relieve the pain in his jaw after just getting clobbered with an uppercut.

There's no protocol, but it is illegal.

Fighters may spit there mouth piece out immediately getting dropped to buy time, but to spit it out after 4 seconds or whatever it was, that's asking the ref to stop the fight.
