Can't say I blame him. He arguably lost 5 of his last 6 fights (Dirrel, Porky, Jack, and Traux X 2), made Bute look like a rejuvenated fighter and was likely getting stopped by Jose.

We are already used to by now how the Brits excuse for ducking and not only they accept it, they will justify it.

It's a duck but a good duck, DeGale faced the big names it's time to cash out, he would lose to this fella and he is allowed to make big money against maybe Groves or something.

He dropped his prestigious world title to avoid facing the mandatory challenger. How else do you need it explained? You can still respect him, but it's a duck. It's just amusing how some writers & fans can justify this while they roast other fighters for doing the same thing.

Yes because I am sure the British were the first to vacate a f***ing belt.

                Fantastic article.

I think a few people are missing the point. We know there’s a good chance DeGale would lose to Uzcatsgui. But not only would he lose his belt, he’d have probably lost the big paydays against Eubank and Groves. And we would have lost the chance to see them

This move by DeGale is basically acknowledging that his time fighting the young lions is over. He’s only in the game for a couple more fights and we’d almost all prefer that to be against the WBSS winner who will be widely considered the best at 168, doubly true if it’s Groves. To give DeGale his credit, he’s fought pretty much everyone at his weight other than Frouch who retired when DeGale was mando. It’s not like he’s a serial sucker, so at the end of his career, I guess we can cut him some slack.

There is a bit of hypocrisy though I admit that, we do complain that fighters too often duck others, we can’t have it both ways.

But honestly, I don’t mind this. DeGale v Groves II has been nearly a decade in the making and would be huge. I don’t want that to be diminished by DeGale getting smashed by Uzcatsgui.

The Eubank fight would be an entertaining scrap too.

Although rumour has it he might be fighting Saunders.
