He is definitely overrated for what he has actually done in the sport. He beat a drained Brook who came from the worst beating of his life and had to move down 2 weightclasses. Then he beat Peterson, well but Lucas Matthysse already knocked out a much better fresher Peterson in 2 rounds. Thats Spences resume.

He still passes the eye test and he is the most exciting welterweight out there.

Hes pushing 30 and His best wins are a battle torn peterson and a broken faced kell brook. I guess they still havent learned the broner lesson in hyping up fighters with no resume to back the hype. If spence runs through thurman, crawford, danny, porter then ill give him his just dues but as of right now hes unproven.

I used to be very critical of Spence, he has refined his skills and to me he looks very legit.

Saunders doesn't get anywhere near the hype Spence does. So how is he more overrated?

Spence was clearly losing the first half against Brook who was badly weight drained and had facial damage. There is nothing to boast about where he's concerned. No one is putting Saunders on any P4P list the way they do with Spence.

I wouldn't go that far. Spence is definitely a really good fighter. We just don't know how great he is yet because of his resume. Some key bullet points below.
                  • How does he do against the upper crust?
                  • How does he do when things aren't going his way?
                  • How does he do when he gets his chin checked?
                  • Can he switch gears when he needs to?

Those are all key questions to determine how great a fighter is.

If I was to answer those questions right now based on direct analysis:

                  1. I think he does really good against the top guys, but doesn't perform like he has been. I think he can be outboxed and wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Thurman outbox him. Look at his jab and overall perfomance against Brook. he looked really flat and his jab looked like áss cheeks. He even mentioned he was off his game. Dude, you can't have a jab that gets flat like that this early in the game.

                  2. Does he have a Plan B? I really don't think he does. Spence comes right at you, lots of pressure on the front foot. Thats a hard style to do good against when the fighter has power and the way he hits the body is a double threat.

                  3. It's just a matter of time before he gets his chin checked. He could be tough as nails, but even those guys can get rattled. Look at Floyd, had his chin checked plenty and he showed us his resilience, Spence hasn't. Only time will tell. Seems tough so far.

                  4. Switching gears mid-fight or mid-round is the hallmark of a true master. Very few fighters have/had this ability. I really don't see Spence having this ability or much of it. He's been having so much success with his current style, I don't think he's got provisions in place for when it doesn't work. It appears he's a one trick pony and I've been watching him since the Am's.

I don't put Cotto in this category, just making a reference. Cotto had more than one style to draw from and executed it when he needed to. Cotto did a lot of Boxing in the Am's and I mean Boxing like lateral movement in a completely different style that his normal brawler approach.

SRL could change gears on a dime and thats what got him the Hearns 1 win. Marquez had a bit of it. Floyd had a lot of it. I never made a list, just going off the top of my head. I should make a list though as it's an interesting phenomenon.

Nice post. As a Spence fan, I think you raised some good points. I think Spence is the best at 147.

IMO Spence is bigger than Crawford, likely stronger than Crawford, better chin, better body work, and more volume than Terence Crawford.

Hell no he isn't overrated. He is the best welterweight in the world. He KOed Algieri when Pacquiao and nobody else could. He KOed Bundu who Thurman could not KO. He KOed Peterson who beat Khan and almost beat Garcia. He went to England and KOed Brook who only lost to GGG. Spence is a great boxer and a great puncher with excellent stamina and a sturdy chin. He is the best body puncher in boxing today. Where did you get the ****** idea Spence is a quitter? He fears nobody and has never shown any sign of quitting. When a boxer has done what Spence has done and people say good things about him that is not hype. That is just the plain truth. You are a terrible judge of boxing talent. Go ahead and bet against Spence and lose your money every time.
