Something was clearly wrong with McClelland as early as the 2nd or 3rd round,he was sloppier than usual and seemed in distress, and he was blinking that early and his gumshield beginning to hang out at times. The supposed headbutt happened in the 9th,but on the ITV(British version) replay it showed that Benns head only hit McClelland under the eye and not on the head. So it was clearly not the 'headbutt' that caused the head injury, thats a load of rubbish.
For me its quite obvious that Benns comeback power shots were just the icing on the cake to something that had started in the gym,and remember didnt Manny Steward say that McClelland had been complaining of headaches since the 1st Julian Jackson fight? Its known that McClelland was sparring with heavyweights at the Pea**** Gym in London prior to the Benn fight, ask Barry McGuigan who was there, and he was going to war in sparring the week before the fight. And if someone was whacking you to worsen a head injury, the last person Id want whacking me would be Nigel Benn!
Its unforuntate that McClelland boxed with no guard(including sparring wars) and had the resolve to stand up to Julian Jacksons and Nigel Benns punches without going over. Apparently McClelland never had a guard even as a kid, said he always felt far more comfortable getting his shots off with his arms dangling and relied on his timing to get him by.
